He is worthy of the Hall Of Fame. Larry Allen could not move him from his spot in the 49er vs Cowboy games. He had 89.5 sacks, Warren Sapp had 96.5. If Bryant Young played in a one gap like Sapp his number could have been higher.

Justin Smith is better than Bryant Young.

Uh, Bryant Young didn't face Larry Allen in the 49ers/Cowboys games. Allen was the Cowboys' left guard (or right tackle in 94, since Erik Williams was out that year after the car crash). Allen was busy dominating Dana Stubblefield in the post-94 meetings. Bryant Young was indeed a 1-gap player. He was undersized, and teams knew it, so they would run right at him (single-teamed...Young was hardly ever doubled...he wasn't big enough to double) and he wasn't particularly good vs. the run.

Before the leg injury, he was good with plays run away from him. He could stack and shed blocks and work his way east-west. He could also jump the snap, shoot into the backfield, and avoid being controlled at the line of scrimmage. After the injury, he was pretty much a non-factor until he was moved to DE in the 3-4.

cortez was a beast. he won defensive player of the year on a 2 win football team. i love BY but its gonna be hard for him to get in.

He deserves to go, but won't get consideration.

Great player, but he didn't post up the kind of stats that makes people scream "elite, superstar player." I hate Warren Sapp, but the Bucs ran a scheme that allowed him to rack up sacks and be disruptive. Bryant Young, as a defensive tackle, was used as a run-stopper, and thus, people don't see the flashy stats that get you into the Hall of Fame. Throw in the fact that he wasn't this loud, attention-hungry player, people easily forget him.

I really wish he'd make it. He was a class act, and when we were in our rebuilding phase, he was the soul of our team, in my opinion. I really hope the 49ers retire his number soon. Maybe at the first home game at the new stadium?

Maybe, maybe not. I've never seen Bryant Young in his prime, but when we went to a 3-4 and he was getting some sacks in a pass-rushing role, he was great.

We're very lucky to have both of them. But to be fair to BY, he played the majority of his career "doing the dirty work" in a run-stopping role. Who knows what kind of stats he would've picked up if he was allowed to play in more of an aggressive role.

For one, he was never great against the run. He was solid in that area, but not a dominant run defender at the point of attack...and that's the most important aspect for a defensive tackle.

The greatest interior lineman the 49ers have ever had is Kevin f*gan. It really sucks his career was cut short with all the injuries - he was absolutely the best run stuffer I've ever seen play the game. It was absolutely impossible to run on him. He was too strong and powerful and he played up to his legendary weight room numbers.

Loved young. Was the reason I became a niner fan, watched a game with my father (who had just given me a Montana shirt) when I was 7 and that was it been red and gold ever since.

Was playing madden one year and first game of preseason young broke his tailbone and it ended his career. Never been so devastated about a video game lol

His sack numbers fell off a lot after his first few seasons. Too many d-lineman from his era are higher on the all time sack list than him, probably need more than 4 pro bowls to get in also. Great player, great 49er but a little short of HOF credentials.
