You are correct, I try to go with official numbers because a lot easier for people to track and avoid argumentations. Niners were not bad for the most of his years, Dallas was the obstacle which is why the catch that allowed us to get over the hump and into the SB was made all the more sweeter. They did waste some picks though-like drafting Spurrier who was a bust. What really killed the niners during his years was the WFL who poached our several of our players.
They drafted Hardman in 1970 so they had 3 good years and then it started to fall off. By the middle of the 70's they were terrible. One thing to keep in mind about sacks. Prior to 1982 they weren't an official stat. One of the reasons was that sacking the QB didn't carry as much weight as it does now since teams were built around the run and passed far less. The great teams had great backs. So when I see numbers like 130 sacks for Hardman or 173 for Deacon Jones it floors me. These guys put up those numbers with fewer opportunities because of less passing and fewer games. Hardman had 18 in 14 games.
Jones was in another world. From 1964 thru 1969 he averaged 19.5 sacks per year. (117.5) Imagine having more sacks in 6 years than the great Sir Cedrick or Young had in his entire Niner careers. I imagine if they were to go back and count QB hurries it would be thru the roof. He did benefit from playing next to Merlin Olson with Rosey Grier and Lamar Lundy on the other side.
