Did Joe Montana and Steve young ever reconcile?

I wonder how many games Montana and Young had in which they threw over 100+ yards and 1 TD in the same game. I know the 89 one vs the Pats stands out the most.
Too bad the Bucs didn't trade Young in the 86 season. They probably would have gotten a better deal then what they did get for him in offseason.

They been to a few events together. Go to Joe's twitter and look at the Feb 23rd post. Just Google Joe Montana's twitter.

I don't think either one of them hated the other. That's way too strong a word. I think Montana was annoyed by Young's presence on the team and Young was frustrated that Montana didn't support him. But there are lots of pictures of them working together as team mates. My favorite picture is the famous one of both of them reviewing photos of defensive formations together in the locker room.

.. or vice versa... as Joe may have felt "what this young guy doing w/the team still when I'm not going anywhere anytime soon" ... and while Steve's frustration is more like "damnnn, when is this guy gonna start becoming average QB, my time is running out and I don't wanna go any place else"...

Don't forget as well that Steve Young once was going to be traded to Seattle for two #1s until he said that he will retire from the NFL if he gets traded..

I didn't remember this Seattle trade thing. When did that happen?
By no means I'm trying to be a smart ass or sarcastic up in here.. But, how long have you guys been a 49er fan? just an honest question..

Where you guys following the team back from the early 80s? Any 49er News Reports subscription?

I did, back then, and still have all 3 year issued (report) locked up in our Private Storage.. Those reports along with sporting news is where I used to read and learn about what I post up in here..

There was a time when Steve Young would be so pissed for not getting enough rep time in practice, and not cashing in his checks due to the fact that he believed he hasn't earned it, the he became so frustrated and his roomate Harris Barton was the one to always have to put up with his complaints.

It was then reporterd that the great agent Leigh Steinberg had shopped Steve Young around and Seattle was one of the team that was very interested, and even had the idea of giving up two 1st rounders.

I'm guessing a lot longer than you. I went to my first game at Kezar in 1964.

No. Joe was unflappable and Steve wasn't. Bottom line we have Joe in 92 we beat the cowboys. Bye the way 97 98 teams had very good defenses and garrison Hearst.
I just posted Joe's flapped statistics. First 2-NFC title games: 4 TDs & 5 INTs.

Who has the greatest Super Bowl performance ever?.....Steve

97 & 98 Packers were more talented than 97 & 98 49ers. When did Joe play on the less talented team in the Playoffs?

With your logic, maybe the 49ers win the 1985 & 1986 Super Bowls with Steve under center. Who couldn't win a Playoff game with Jerry Rice, Dwight Clark, Roger Craig & Russ Francis.

Truth: Joe's 49er teams have more hardware so Joe gets the benefit of the doubt and that's fair. He deserves it with his performances in the Super Bowl, but what if he didn't have that great defense to bail him out in the 1981 & 1984 NFC title games.....like Steve? Then you are looking at 2 Super Bowls: Note the clip of Joe throwing the INT versus the Bengals. That's 1 single lone Championship for Joe. So do you really think he would have made the difference in 1992, 1993 or 1997? Maybe but probably not.

I remember listening to Skip Bayless ( former beat writer for Cowboys) when he was talk show host on KNBR years ago and he said that the feeling in the Cowboys locker room 92 & 93 was that they were evenly matched with the 49ers but could not beat the 49ers with Montana at QB but felt that they could against the Young led team and that gave them the confidence to rise up and beat the 49ers in NFC title games. I remember making my wife stop watching Beverly Hills 90210 after Fox showed Luke Perry and Jason Priestly on the Cowboys sidelines. Ahhhhh... newlywed bliss

Yeah that's the talk about the 92 NFC championship at least when it comes to if Montana started in that game.

I think there are a lot of fans around my age who have that stronger connection to Young, and maybe even prefer him a little bit just because of the impact he had on our childhoods.

this is weird. I'm 33 going on 34, Joe was my favorite ever. Loved Steve as well. But I remember how Joe and Bill Walsh made me feel as a child. There was just this comfort, with Joe's smile and two arms up after TDs, knowing about his wife Jennifer as a child. As well as like a different father feeling when Bill Walsh would talk. I just loved the guy. There was just this comfort feeling of everything would be alright with them as our leaders.

this doesn't take away from what George Seifert did and how I felt about him as well. Same thing with Steve Young. We couldn't just run the ball consistently when Steve first took over in the early 90's. Then when we finally got a great runner in Ricky, we let him get away. Regardless of how his attitude was. (he seems like a real humble down to earth guy now though, love when he is on the post game shows.)
As someone else said, Joe may have been the better QB, but Young was the bigger man. Neither "hated" each other, but Montana definitely had a lower opinion of Young than the converse.. I've heard Young be very complimentary of Montana several times over the years. Can't say the same of Montana. Can't think of one instance. In fact, I can't recall Montana referring to him by name! That's the one thing that diminishes Joe in my eyes, his apparent pettiness in that "relationship", if it even can be called that.

I didn't remember this Seattle trade thing. When did that happen?

Notre Dame's Rick Mirer wore Joe Montana's #3 for the Fighting Irish, and Mirer was compared to the SF Hall-of-Famer ad nauseam leading up to the draft. Like Montana, Mirer was a mobile QB who was effective with his legs as well as his arm. In fact, San Francisco was so enamored with Mirer that they wanted to trade Steve Young to the Seahawks for the #2 pick in the 1993 draft. The Niners' plan was to keep Montana to groom Mirer, but Montana was already dead-set on moving on from San Francisco after perceived slights from the front office during the 1992 season- So Young stayed in the Bay Area, Montana was traded to Kansas City, and the Seahawks kept that draft pick.

New England took Bledsoe #1, and Seattle snapped up Mirer with the subsequent pick.
