Celek! I like him. Nice traditonal TE that does what you need him to do..run routes and catch the ball. Now we just need one of those 6'6 basketball player types..one with some decent speed but more importanly hands and we can have a nice 2 te set.

I do have hope for Busta tho..hope he can play.

I don't get the notion that Celek is a good receiver. He was never the #1 TE on his college teams and he hasn't shown much as a pro. Zero catches yesterday, including one that hit him in the hands.
The 49ers will need a TE that can catch the ball and run block.
He has earned a spot on the team, but I don't see him as a starter. I think it would be silly to go TE in the first round in 2016, but we could use a surehanded guy at the position.

The crazy speed of Vernon Davis has spoiled me and I would love to have another homerun hitter at the position, but right now having a guy with a larger catch radius, will fight for the ball, and catch whatever comes his way is more important. Celek appears to be that guy more so than Davis, but again, he is no starter.

I want to see a little more of McDonald before writing him off.

Blake Bell has huge upside and has excellent hands. The leaping grab he made while taking a VICIOUS shot in the back and still hanging on was a special type of catch. The kid is a converted QB to TE, so I think in a couple years he would be start material. Celek has earned a spot as one of the two starters for now. I don't know how the team feels about McDonald going forward, but we all know Vernon won't be back next year -- he'll either retire or sign somewhere else.

I was a mcdonald apologist, and ive seen enough. The guy has some of the worst hands ive ever seen in an nfl player, and he doesnt run great routes(this is why he doesnt get thrown to a lot, not that they are ignoring him). It would be fantastic due to his athleticism and size, and aggressive running. But he has had enough chances.

Id rather roll with celek(not sold on him) and develop bell(like his potential but not sold on him), and busta. Vernon is done, love the guy, he jsut doesnt look right.

Not me. He looks like Tarzan, plays football like Jane.

Dan
So Niners are finalizing a long term deal with Garrett i see.

http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/7982/garrett-celek

ESPN's Adam Caplan reports the 49ers and free agent TE Garrett Celek are "close to finalizing" a tong-term contract.

Much like his older brother, Eagles TE Brent Celek, Garrett is more of a block-first tight end. He blocked on 242 of his 407 offensive snaps last season, catching 19 passes for 186 yards (9.8 YPR) and three touchdowns. Celek and Vance McDonald could be the tight-end duo for coach Chip Kelly. Feb 17 - 2:34 PM

sounds good to me one less position to worry about this upcoming year IMO.

His brother was a great receiver in college and the NFL, Garrett Celek is the Don Gronkowski of the Celek family.

Good move. Celek's a solid player. I'm not against upgrading obviously but I feel good about Celek, VMac, Bell, and Busta going into the season next year.

Celek is pretty much a jack of all trades. Not particularly great at any one facet but solid to good in all of them.
"solid". On this team, we will take that , and gladly.

I still think we look for a receiving threat at TE even with a resigning. Maybe an undersized guy like Cajuste from Stanford. That rounds out our TE unit very well. Celek, Bell, McDonald and a rookie paired with our IR/PS guys from last year.
