Can Darryl field punts?
With his speed he may have added value as a returner.

It won't be a surprise if Morris beats out Ward. It won't matter which one is back up, we won't miss a beat... they'll both turn out to be real good (IMHO).
Although, I prefer to have Ward be the starter in the slot. Morris would be a a solid back up and still be killing it on ST... he's definitely got the advantage over Ward in that regards (ST) and we need him there.

Yes, I had him listed as fielding some returns (along with a long list of players).

Hunter has also returned kicks. I don't know if he ever gets PR reps in practice though, cause doesn't look like he's returned one in a game.

Agreed! Let me know this TC if you hear he is back returning and I'll add him. We have needed a dynamic returner so badly for so long now! I will be watching that battle closely.

A dynamic returner would be a backbreaker against almost every team we play.
Getting great field position instead of good field position would put us in a great attack mode.

Yep, that's a lot of how the team won in 2011. They were either #1 or close in average starting field position and opponents' average starting position. A lot of that had to do with the ridiculous turnover differential though.

Don't think there's any real way for Ward to beat out Bethea this year since he's got $10mil guaranteed.
Not sure about that $ figure. But let's say it is, if Ward is the better player, the Niners will start him.
I just don't think they're going to give the dude enough reps in practice to unseat a proven vet that they just signed for pretty big bucks. Sure if Bethea bombs there's a chance, but it sounds like maybe (making these numbers up) 75% of Ward's reps are going to be at CB and 25% at safety. Next year maybe, but it doesn't make sense this year.
Yeah, i get what you are saying. But, if at some point the Niners deem that the best combo is having Morris man the slot and Ward is getting decent snaps at safety and outperforming Bethea, i could definately see a change in their philosophy. But yes, if their idea is to have Ward be the main slot DB off the bat (which i think we all agree it is), it would be difficult to give him more snaps at safety in TC.
