we played prevent defense the entire damn game.
we didn't play prevent defense the entire game. clearly have no idea what you're talking about whether sarcastic or not.

Guys, can we give this defense some love? 12 yards shy of being ranked the #1 defense overall at mid-season.
2 San Francisco 2,335 291.9 1650 206.3 685 85.6 178 22.3
No matter how you slice it, pre season, with all the changes in Whitner, Cully coming back, Brock, Cox, Brown, Rogers, Dorsey, Bowman, Aldon, Willis, Bethea, Cook, Johnson, Morris, Ward, etc. out or in, every fan would have been elated if I guaranteed you we'd be the #1 and #2 ranked defense through the first half of the year WITHOUT Willis, Bowman, Aldon, Brock, Whitner, Rogers, Brown, Dorsey, etc.
And here we are...and the all-pro reserves are coming back soon and we've found some critical players in Lynch, Borland, Ian Williams, Cook, Bethea, Cox, Johnson, Wilhoite, perhaps, Ward and others like Skuta, Cully, etc.

I know, I know! LOL. That tells you how much this is a passing league though too. Well, except for us, of course. LOL

oh, no doubt, Fangio needs to go as well..
I've been saying it over and over, just like when he was with Jim Mora, the Saints would always have a nice defense, but that Fangio & the Dome Patrol defense would never be in the championship...
because they are wild and crazy bunch during the season, but when it counts, Fangio's guts to call for an aggressive all out kinda defense would always become BEND BUT DONT BREAK ..

If I were Fangio i would be pulling a buddy ryan and getting into a slug feast with Roman for wasting his D's time.

This is why I am convinced the offensive coaching is largely to blame for the current tailspin...the defensive coaches have had more players injured and have still had their unit play at a high level.

You know me...I never bought the "personnel" excuses for the offense. Ever!

before the season someone comes up to you and says
ey bruh in the Denver game at Denver you wont have:
Glenn Dorsey
Navorro Bowman
Aldon Smith
Patrick Willis
Chris Culliver
Jimmy Ward (you dont know he sucks yet, remember
)
you will have Tramaine Brock back for first game since the opener, he might be still hurt
oh and btw Peyton will be gunning for the record in that game.
how many points would you say we'd give up ?
Id say, definitely over 35. something like 40. which is close to what we gave up.
this D is a bend not break defense, and Peyton usually breaks these apart. its not hard to do when half of your team is injured or suspended.
I have no major beefs with Fangio and D, besides keeping Ward on Marshall against the Bears.

It is a personnel Issue with the offense. Just not player personnel it's coaching.
1 side of the ball gets the maximum out of it's players at every position and the other does not.

The only issue I have with offensive personnel is that they have a power running line and would like to throw some spread in there. Most linemen can do either somewhat but expecting it to be smooth right away is not realistic. Did they practice this in pre season? I have not studied video as to line spacing but I know that when you change schemes the spacing often has to change as well. Is this the issue?
My guess? This line is built for power over speed, making it very difficult to pass block or play spread out. That and the combination of other factors makes it difficult to blame one area...so the blame goes up, not down the chain of command.
- Line type
- QB
- Playcall
- Coaching
- Scheme
- Head Coach
So if you look at the list above you have to ask, "Who has the responsibility for each area in order to fix the problems?" Only the HC can affect each of the others. He has to admit the problem, find solutions, and then take action(s). In mid year, what can you do? My answer--playcalling/coaching. I would have a team meeting, go through the video of problems and modify the plays to the ones they do best for the next game...even if it's down to five plays...two running, two passing and punt. This team looks tired and adding a bunch of new plays is not likely to help.

On Ahmad Brooks trade rumor
"You know it was never mentioned to me before the trade deadline ended, and I would think that if there was any seriousness going on along those ways, that Trent would have mentioned it to me. And he never did, so I think those reports are way out of line."
On the state of the defense
"Well I think you know outside of the Denver game we´ve gone out there and given ourselves a chance to win the game defensively each and every week."

Refreshingly honest.
BTW: Can someone explain to me how Ward is ALWAYS in trail mode? He's not unquick or slow by any means but he's always in trail-mode. Is that a design...like an underneath design and technique to stay with WR's in the slot while we have deep cover S help?
