Like it or not Fangio was average at best Dc until the old jets coach Eric Mangini came over and was a consultant to the team last year! He taught Fangio how to play combination conerages instead of just that man zone. That is why we were able to be more competitive against the seahawks the last two times we played them!

49ers were ranked 13th in total D in 2010
they've been ranked withing the top 5 D in 2011, 2012, 2013 and so far in 2014

Wrong. The Niners defense was good. They were never, ever great. The game changing type of plays were few and far between. I'd like to go so far as to say they never happened, but I'm sure someone can pull out an exception to the rule. Our defense was great at holding offenses the majority of the game under Mike Nolan and Singletary, but eventually they would wear down. This defense generally doesn't let up. This defense generally can win now in spite of the offense. It's not even close.
