Fangio won't become our HC because he has a brutally honest style, and York HATES coaches with brutally honest styles. When Harbaugh said "pay the man" about one of our players, York was incensed I heard. When he said the Niners are "above reproach", same thing. This is not a f**king popularity contest, but that is what York is trying to win. What would Eddie D do?

Therefore, with Fangio likely not getting the job, he will be likely miffed and then with the abundance of defensive minded coaches getting interviewed, he'll likely want to get out. The fact that the niners are allowing him to interview for other positions leaves me flabbergasted. What have you done, Jed York? How are we going to hold you accountable exactly?

I've never been this mad as a niners fan. Even Alex Smith's perennial incompetence didn't make me this angry.

That is pretty damning. If they were in a good spot with Fangio they wouldn't allow him to interview for lateral position moves. For a HC job elsewhere sure but to be interviewing for the same job wiht other teams to me means Fangio is about to roll.

I think it's fair to allow him to at least interview because who knows if the new head coach will retain his services. No harm at all in making connections with a new team just in case. With that said, if I'm Vic Fangio I'd be confident that the front office wants to keep the defensive staff in tact and there is no way I'd leave San Francisco to go to DC. This was his greatest job yet as a defensive coordinator and he has had his best run as a playcaller in San Francisco. If he is truly interested in becoming a head coach, I think his best bet is to remain with the 49ers and continue to dominate as a DC. He will get some looks, particularly if we put together a great run defensively with a winning team. Also, if he doesn't get the job here, big deal. Learn the interview process and how to put together a good presentation.

With that said, if he goes, I will be upset, but let's not kid ourselves. There are quality defensive coordinators out there. I'd love to see what Wade Phillips could do with this defense.

are you nuts? It's fair to let the best DC in the NFL go casually interview around for lateral positions? Do you think the Pats feel the same way about Billicheck ? That's ridiculous logic and makes me think you are Jed York under a different handle.

Good point. The thing that's puzzling about Fangio is that he's been running a top defensive unit for 4 years now. And no other teams have been sniffing around him as a HC. I mean how more can successful of a unit can a guy run. Seattle DC Bradley got hired and the guy replacing him is already a hotter name than Fangio. Maybe Fangio just might not be coming off as HC material to the front office ppl around the league.

Again, who knows what the next head coach is going to do. Also, if Vic Fangio seriously wants to leave the 49ers to interview for Washington, then I question his sanity. Forget the fact that the front office gave him permission. Think about the fact that he willingly wants to interview with him. He wants to leave a defense stacked with All-Pros and talented young players for the Redskins. And yes it is fair. Don't get it twisted, I don't like it and if I'm calling the shots, I want the entire defensive staff to remain in place along with Tom Rathman. But you can't tell a coach you have to keep these guys.
I also think there's a lot of speculation going on, much like our coaching search four years ago. There is no way Jim Tomsula becomes our HC, no disrespect.
Did shannahan have good DC's while he coached at denver/Washington?
Fangio HC interview excerpt:

Interviewer: What's your offensive philosophy?

Fangio: It's a necessary evil. I want an offense that can give my defense rest going into the 4th qtr. That means no f**king turnovers, less 3 & outs. If they score quickly, that usually means my defense has to get back on the field, that's unacceptable unless they can score a lot of points. I rather they run the ball, have long drives, be up by 10 going into the 4th. With my defense rested, we will take the game, close out with a win.

Interviewer: The NFL rule change has favored the offense in recent years. How do you feel about that, and how would you compensate that on defense?

Fangio: The new rules are bullish*t. I would do what Seattle is doing. You can't hit 'em, just hold 'em and make it look like incidental contact. BTW, this is BS. You know about my years of experience and my track record. Do I get the job or not....

Last report I read said permission denied. Something change?

Off the top of my head, jack del rio in Denver. Haslet as DC in Washington with Rahim Moore on that staff as well. Del rio was coveted from his time in Denver as I recall.

Theres nothing to indicate that the 49ers are allowing Washington to interview Fangio so youre getting all worked up over nothing. They let Donatell interview simply because its the fair thing to do and theyve blocked the guy from DC interviews previously.

Fangio is a good DC but pretty far from irreplaceable. Prior to coming to the 49ers he was pretty mediocre over his career as a defensive coordinator. He was the reason that Jim Mora was fired by the Colts. He was the playcaller for some truly horrid defenses.

He has done a great job with the 49ers and I think he realizes he is in a good situation with the team, he benefits as much from the talent as the talent benefits from him.

I doubt he is going to go anywhere, especially Washington which is a burning dumpster fire with a coach on the hot seat. I hope Donatell avoids that job too, simply because he deserves better.

This. I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet, given he has experience and keeps on churning out quality DBs. But Ed Donatell's time is coming again. Our entire defensive staff should enjoy the ride and enjoy being as untouchable as you can get in coaching.
