Before Pat, Takeo Spikes was your prototypical Mike. Not anymore.

This is purely about time played - which isn't even listed in the considerations. They're supposed to look at quality of player(has it in spades) and impact on the history of the game(again, set a new standard and type for the MIKE position).

If Gale Sayers is in while only playing from 65-71 and only played in 2 games in each of 70 and 71, how in the H-E double hockey sticks is Pat not in?
Kurt Warner only had 4 seasons with 12 or more starts - he's in.
Joe Guyon only played in 49 games but is in because he was the first native american
Dick Stanfel only played in 73 games and he's in as an offensive Guard
Doak Walker only played in 67 games and is in as a RB
Ernie Nevers only played 5 seasons

Pat played in 112 games.

So much this.

Ray Lewis is the one who changed the Mike position. Willis was on his way, but quit

Lol dog the guy that hung it up because he no longer felt that he could play at an elite level due to injuries and praise the guy who literally got away with murder.

How is it dogging, it's just the reality of the situation

This is a great analysis. The only part I slightly disagree with is the Gale Sayers comparison. Willis is probably my favorite 49er of all time—but Sayers is arguably the most electric player in the history of football. Nevertheless, your point is still valid. Willis shouldn't be dinged for having played less than a decade.

it is great and all , but most of those guys probably don't get in the HOF playing closer to the new era

agree... plus did you really see all those guys play??

I would only speak for the ones I saw playing... starting 1981..
The HOF is a popularity contest. It's not just just based on stats. The people that vote aren't given a specific set of parameters that they must use when voting. Some look at numbers and others look at impact on the game. Some look at how long he played. Some just look at the uniform.

By quit you mean retired. Pat and Ray should both be in with no asterisks.

Don't need to see them to know, that the level of play is not how it is today.

I didn't say Pat shouldn't be in, just trying to unbunch some undies on why he didn't get in so fast. He will get in

Another major reason is that those guys played offense...and the HOF has somewhere near twice as many offensive players as they have defensive players. It's ridiculous, but it just confirms that a lot of it is just based on 'stats.'

I guess Steve Young "quit" too then.

Chris Borland quit. Patrick Willis retired because his feet were shot.

What does murder have to do with his on the field play? Anyone who thinks that Willis was a better player than Lewis is just being a homer. Lewis is arguably the greatest MLB of all time, Willis maybe cracks the top 10.

Love Willis, but no SBs, short career, no DPOY, sorry but you can't be called the greatest or anywhere close to that
