just my 2 cents

6 time All-Pro, yet was only truly elite 3 times? Derp de derp!

Tell me you didn't watch the 49ers during that time without telling me you didn't. When was Willis ever considered DPOY from someone who wasn't a 49ers fan? Even Willis admits injuries slowed him down during that time. Justin Smith was the best player on defense during Harbaugh and it's not even close

The irony. Clearly you became a fan in 2015. He was elected to SIX all-pro teams in 7 seasons. Not from fan voting, All-Pro.

2007 : 1st team All-Pro
2008 : 2nd team All-Pro
2009 : 1st team All-Pro
2010 : 1st team All-Pro
2011 : 1st team All-Pro
2012 : 1st team All-Pro
2013 : Pro Bowl
2014 : Injured in week 5 and ended up retiring

But he's not a HOFer? Can't take you seriously going forward.

Literally nobody became a 49ers fan in 2015

I've been watching Niners games every Sunday during football season damn near my entire life and invested more time, emotion and money in them than any sane person, but yeah please tell me how i became a fan when he hired Tomsula LMAO. Anyways I know it's not a popular opinion amongst the fanbase because Willis was a huge fan favorite during his time here, but just telling you how the rest of the league views him. Sorry if it hurts your feelings
you're not hurting anyones feelings cause your opinion isn't fact and far from the truth

you think Jimmy is great qb.. enough said

Save your baffling hate for the best 49ers QB since Jeff Garcia for the other thread bud. All I said was Willis only had 3 truly elite years before injuries caught up with him, something he's even admit himself. Great player? Yes. But not enough to be a hall of famer
hate..? lol you're just embarrassing yourself on these takes

like i said before your opinion isn't fact and far from the truth. Thanks for trying

Saying Willis was great but not a hall of famer isn't a fact? Lmao well the ppl the vote in players every year seem to think otherwise. Keep crying because someone's opinion differs from yours
right.. comments from you saying he had only 3 good years, not the best player, not the best LB even and has never made iconic plays ... yeah you're full of it lol

votes doesn't change history

I said he had 3 elite years (2007-2009)
Justin smith was the best and most important player on defense from 2011-2014. Look at what happened when he got injured after that SNF game against NE.
and yes Bowman was the better LB during the Harbaugh years, especially by 2013
2013 was Pats 7th and last almost full season

they both played 7 seasons.. who had the better career ?

Willis didn't have as bad of injury but he continued to play at a high level with the injury that eventually made him retire

if you want use the injury excuse.. compare their first 4 season without any major injuries.. spoiler alert it's still PW

PW was, and is one of the best LBs of his era, if we want to talk short careers being a deterrent to be elected, then why did Calvin Johnson get in, didn't he have just 1 more yr played than PW? I'm tired of the "he only played X amount of years" look at Terrell Davis, Barry Sanders, and so many more, PW's production speaks for itself IMO.

Being a finalist for the HOF in his what 3rd year of eleligibility, is all the evidence we need anyways
How many dominating years did butkus have? 4, 65-68? Maybe 69?

Sayers?

The short career excuse doesn't hold water.

dumb dumb dumb. Some sportswriters voted against Willie Mays in his first ballot. Crazy to think.
Cant we just agree that for a time we probably had the two best inside linebackers in the NFL?

That's not even debatable
If he surprised if he got in this year. But I think recency bias and his dominant play could be enough for him to get in.

Personally I don't think he gets in. If this was the 80s no doubt, but in this NFL you are supposed to be able to play longer than the 7-8 years that he played. If he could've played another 3-4 years, even if it wasn't at an elite level, then he would've got in.

That reasoning doesn't make sense....Calvin Johnson just went in.
Look.....Patrick Willis is a HOF player. He was a dominant player at his position when he played, and that in general, should be the main reason why you make the HOF.
The reasons he's not going in are these, in no particular order:

1.) He played defense. Offensive players still make up the majority of HOF'ers, which is ridiculous on its own.
2.) There are no discernable numbers. This ties in with the offense, because voters can say 'he led the league in catches 3 times' or 'he led in passing yards 4 times' and such and such. There are no realistic numbers for an off the ball LB....his game wasn't built around getting a ton of sacks or ints.
3.) His career was short. It's not a good argument, because anybody who watched Willis during his prime knows how good he was. It still hurts him.
4.) He was a soft spoken guy who didn't yell and scream and promote himself like Ray Lewis. He didn't seek out attention, and it hurts him - again....another idiotic reasoning, but it does hurt him.
5.) He played LB for the 49ers - the franchise known for Walsh and Montana and the WCO. If he was a defender on those halcyon, dynasty years, he'd have a much better chance. Had he played LB for say....the Chicago Bears - a team known for defense and the linebacker tradition, he'd have a better chance to go into the Hall. He played on a team that never won a Super Bowl. Again...that's a knock.

Each one of those reasons isn't the be all/end all, but combine them and it's a much tougher road for him to get to the HOF.

I agree with you, but I will say that Patrick Willis was a very popular football player. A lot of casual fans know the same, unlike a say, Lance Briggs or Thomas Davis, two other recent hall of fame worthy linebackers who will never get considered.

Patrick had commercials with Duracell and K-Swiss, so he had some marketability. I think it'll be a while, but he will eventually get in.
