I remember when Singletary was HC we'd play Tampa 2 and Willis would sprint back. I guess Fangio won't use him like that?

Hell no, he's gonna be roving the hook to flat zone, claiming souls like he did back when TKO/Cyclops were the Ted/Jack backers. He's been chasing TEs ever since Bowman got the nod; now it's time to see him back in his element. Too many people forgot the havok Willis can wreak as a Mike backer!
True. Willis was willing to sacrifice some of his stats for the good of the team. I expect him to reclaim his position as leading tackler--also for the good of the team.

exactly. when you have 4 capable people you don't have to do more, just your job. now that we're down 2 of those people he's going back into do more mode.

pattern matching is my favorite type of defense that we play. we do it so well because we communicate excellently.

pattern matching kills the other team's qb who's trying to make presnap reads because we don't have to do it all the time just sometimes. so they never really know what's coming. zone one play, man the next, and the pattern matching which is a type of both.. the qb is just lost lol

Good stuff. I have wished I had the time and tech know-how to put up stuff like this. It adds a tremendous amount to any discussion.
So the Hawks just ran a jet sweep and the outside blocker (TE, I believe) was blocking out a DB down field in front of Harvin. I thought a DB could only be blocked out within 1 yard of the LOS now? B/c it's a handoff, all blocking is legal downfield?

Pattern matching is a really effective strategy for pass coverage. A true team concept to covering routes. Using a couple plays from earlier in the thread. Here, HOU plays man coverage and the 49ers are able to run a pick to free up a crossing route.

Below, GB uses a similar play where the curl route (from fullback) is supposed to set a pick for the crossing route. The 49ers pattern match and there is no pick set. Had the slot CB followed the WR across the field on the crossing route, the slot CB would have ran into traffic over the middle. When the WR crosses the field, there is a defender waiting to pick him up.

Added: CB technique (post #3)

We can't really watch how green bay plays the hawks because 2 years later and they still haven't adjusted to the option read yet or how to play it.

I think for that wrinkle, we'll have aldon and bowman back... the instructions on those type of formations will probably be what they are now.. set the edge and stay home. but that's what ward is going to be doing.. that's why he's in there. to be a bulldog tackler on those sweeps.

exactly.
but man kap gets hit entirely too much. he makes so many throws right as he's about to get hit, i don't think people really notice that.

Yeah, you can block anywhere on the field on a run play.

HOF decree!

So shall it be written, so shall it be done!

If the texans were playing our defensive scheme this would have been a sack.

the 2 db's on the left side wouldn't have switched at the snap they would've stayed put to whoever came. and they would have called under so that the crossing route would have went right to the linebacker and he would've picked up i think that's macdonald in the middle of the field coming back towards him.

I believe that is correct as well. I was focused in on that b/c Mike Carey (?) was on talking about pick-plays at the LOS for WR's can only be done within 1 yard now and not 7 yards down the field, etc...the fact that it was technically a running play, the TE can then immediately start blocking and can stay engaged blocking the entire time. Man, imagine how effective this play would be for us with Ellington and Miller, McDonald, VD, Crabtree and/or Boldin blocking out in front on a jet sweep.

PS: If you're in the slot there, you could literally, block out your man AND slam him into the oncoming LB and really seal off that edge for a huge run. The DE would be the only one with a split second chance to catch him.
