Here's Gore's first big run of the game - this was a great blocking scheme and great execution across the board.
Here we start out with a normal offset "I" formation. But, pre-snap we shift into an unbalanced "I" We're going to bring the tackle, Martin, over to play LT and Staley kicks out as a TE. This makes Davis the RT. It completely changes the strength of the formation. We go from a balanced formation, to a heavy left side strong formation with 3 lineman on that side plus the FB.
Here you see the unbalanced line - that's a lot of beef on that side, We're going to run a "94 power" WCO terminology here(or "24 power" for most digit systems). This is where the TE(now Staley) is going to leave the end man on the LOS and pick off the LB. The FB will kick out the end man on the LOS, with the backside guard pulling around into the hole(what makes it a "power" play).
You see Staley head for the LB and Iupati hooks his guy so that the tackle(Martin) gets the angle and then Iupati heads for the 2nd level.
You see the play developing well, the blocking assignments are highlighted - won't have any commentary on next couple pics - they just show the development.
You see the nice lane opened up.
Iupati's block is the one that springs Gore to for the big gain. Without it, it's a solid 6 yard gain, with it - it's a 20 yard gain. He gets to the 2nd level and does a good job of sealing off the safety providing Gore with a nice cutback lane.
Annnnnnd he's in the open field. This is a run game symphony right here.

The 2nd one though, it doesn't matter how good of a view of the RB he has because a LB isn't supposed to have his eyes in the backfield - he's supposed to read the lineman. The lineman will tell you if it's a run or pass. If you see a "high hat" meaning they stand straight up - they're in pass pro and it's a pass. If they fire out low - it's a run. If a guard pulls, the run is going where he's going. So, a LB is supposed to read the "triangle" the Guards through the center to the RB.
Here's the triangle
You see how all the lineman are in pass pro with "high hats". Ward can't actually see the RB behind the lineman and he's dropping - he's reading lineman.
For sure, , this makes me feel like playing some Madden.

I think he's still working on his stuff - The film wasn't available until fairly late yesterday - tech support told us they were having some issue - it was the last game to get uploaded. I'm in the central time zone so I was able to start super early, your time, today. So I'm a little ahead of the curve.

jonnydel, can you breakdown what you saw from Ward? he seemed play pretty solid. That penalty against him was bs. i thought it was excellent coverage and he was in good position for an INT

Jonnydel, do any teams use linemen getting low in run blocking to better sell play action? If the linemen can blow the DL off the ball anyway, why isnt run blocking used consistently despite run or pass?

GREAT thread jonnydel. Thank you for all the work. This is like watching the best parts of the game all over (without the aggravating bad calls.)

This play is stinkin awesome all around - gets me excited! This is the 20 yarder to Stevie Johnson
Here Dallas is going to "sugar" the "A" gaps. Meaning, they bring both their LB's up to the gaps between the center and guards. This puts a lot of pressure on the O-line, hard on the QB because you don't know if both, 1 or none are coming. Dallas gave this look a lot. We have trips right and we're going to run Davis on a streak, Boldin on a short out, and Johnson on a deep curl.
Dallas is trying to run a type of zone out of this with the backside corner taking a man coverage. One of the LB's covering the "A" gap backs out and looks straight for Davis.
The flat defender sees Boldin and drops down to take him away in his "flat" responsibility. The Corner on the bottom(#39) keeps his eyes on Davis worrying about a "corner" route and the LB keeps his eyes on Davis for the "Post" route and the safety keeps his eyes on Davis for the "streak" route. This leaves 3 defenders watching one guy, leaving Johnson unwatched/uncovered.
Meanwhile, this is what happened at the LOS. You see how the LB's have "sugared" the "A" gaps. Then CK talks to his O-line to make sure they've made the proper adjustment.
What Dallas does is actually pretty complex - they back off the LB out of the weakside "A" gap, and then stunt the strong side DE into that hole.
They're trying to show an overload to the strong side so that the RB will take a LB on that side for blitz pickup, however, the line and Gore make the right adjustment and Gore steps up in pass pro. Although, this puts a DE on a RB in pass pro - usually a win for any defense.
Gore absolutely rocks the DE - this was so awesome - I love Gore! He stepped up against a guy who's got at least 65 lbs on him and stands him up.
Because of the O-line - and a huge part by Gore, CK has a nice, clean pocket to throw from.
Meanwhile, at the bat cave....JK, You see the 3 defenders cluing on Davis which will open up Johnson's curl route.
You see how Johnson was able to be open, how CK was able to have a clean pocket to throw from. He gets the ball to Johnson who uses his athletic ability to get yards after the catch - that's an awesome play!
Also to the people who want to put Hyde before Gore, Gore's recognition of the LB stunt and his blocking ability makes him invaluable. A RB has to do more than run hard and fast. He has to be an excellent blocker as well.

The O-line played OK, not great. Iupati -surprisingly, had the best game out of all the O-lineman(from what I saw). Looney had the worst. He got flagged for a couple holds and totally whiffed on a few blocks and gave up some pressures. It will be good to get Boone back. Same thing with Martin, he played better in the first half, but, nothing to make me get excited for - those two guys do provide some better depth though as they are both better at their positions than Snyder was at either.Read more at http://www.49erswebzone.com/forum/niners/179544-dallas-coaches-film-analysis/#IfQbxegthU1cklPy.99
Bingo!!!!!!!!!!!
I have watched this game 3 times and I couldn't agree more. Like I said, Iupati had a bad play maybe two, but overall he did fairly well against Dallas.

Absolutely love the summary but couldn' disagree more with this one. We watch the OL play very closely and WRATH has even provided a detailed analysis for reference. But it's OK to agree to disagree on this one.
Absolutely ok to disagree. My stance just came from a couple things:
He rarely got to the 2nd level on his run blocks, whereas Iupati did very well at that this game. He got beat across his face by the DT several times on both running plays and passing plays. Gore's run that went for -2 yards, Looney got beat across his face and the DT was able to stuff the play. He also wasn't able to move guys around or turn his hips and hook guys like Boone or Iupati can. But, like everything, I don't see everything on every play so it's more an overall impression.
I don't think he played a horrible game, I just felt that his was the least best(if that makes any sense)
For sure!
One of the aspects I do love about Iupati is his effectiveness (and willingness) on pull blocks and esp. when he squares up and drives...he's a hell of a drive blocker and has good technique at the second level when he washes defenders out. The pass protection and mental part of his game is what has become a big issues as of late...b/c it sure isn't an issue physically...unless, it's lateral (DL getting him off center, skirting quickly around him, running right past him, etc.). Certain schemes will require an OL to attack the DL in front and others require they fire PAST the DL and immediately take out the second level LB. Some, like Miller, can and are required to do both (chip out the first and continue on and fire to the second level and wall out). Right now, Looney is as effective if not more as a pulling G. Almost all of our biggest runs came off his pull blocks (all legal BTW) or his drive block (Hyde down to the 2 yard line). But overall, Looney has been more effective in pass protection too and seems to have a nice chemistry with Kilgore and Martin right now. I agree, it's probably 60/40 runs to the right. That's b/c we ask Iupati to pull from his LG spot to the right while Kilgore, Looney and Martin wash out the right side. Of the 40%, I'd bet almost all of those are with Looney pulling to the left side. But to your point, it's very encouraging that we have Staley and Iupati not playing very well out of the gates, don't have our starting RT, a new C and we've been fine WITH a new game plan focus on passing more which requires very good pass protection and communication (and it helps that we have a QB that can have a guy like Staley completly whiffffff and turn that backside pressure into a TD). By the time all the "starters" are set and all the physical and mental issues are behind us, we'll be a better OL with MUCH better depth!

that breakdown of the Stevie Johnson reception shows just how important Vernon is to this offense. He commands a lot of respect and attention, and will open things up for others. Thanks for the inside look.
