Teams know Kaepernick is always trying to go deep but often ignores wide-open underneath options. So they scheme that way. Cover everything deep and then sack him or intercept it when he forces it. We almost never get positive plays against that scheme unless Kaepernick is able to escape the pressure and run, or a WR is able to improv and get open downfield.

Crabb was THE WRONG READ...
WHY????
The FS was sitting 5 yards away, and could have even POP the ball out of Crabb's hand.. The best read here is to Boldin!!
All Kap needed to do was put the ball on the air and let Boldin run under it.. He had more space too!!
it was a pure man to man w/no safety help..

Continues to play the run well - still has mental lapses, he looks a step slower this year(maybe the added weight he put on this year) and isn't playing with good leverage in pass rush. He's getting too high - this is causing a lot of his "illegal hands to the face" stuff. If Skuta keeps playing the way he is this year and Brooks does not vastly improve on his pass rush, I'd be surprised if Brooks is with us next year at a 9 mil cap figure. he's not playing at that level. He's dominant against the run and is doing much better on his pass drops than he did last year, but, he is a step slower - it shows up in his open field tackling and inability to get around the RT the most.
He's also not firing out low on pass rushes, he's coming out a little high, so he's not able to utilize a bull rush to set up a speed rush.

Thanks, cc. I'll go ahead and speak for jonnydel here because we've talked about this. It's about revealing anything that was missing from the broadcast view so we get a better sense of what happened, and to open the floor for discussion so we can all learn from one another. I know I don't see everything, that's why I put the GIFs up so more eyes can see the plays. Football is such a great game and with 22 players flying around the field, a lot happens within 5 seconds that it's hard to see everything the first time around. I'm very happy that these type of threads are well received by the WZ community because this is the stuff I love talking about. Like you said, we have our draftniks, we have our cap experts, we have our armchair GMs, this kind of thread is for our armchair coaches.

Jesus, I didn't see that. AGAIN he just locked onto Crabs with absolutely no intent to go anywhere else. It just needs to stop BUT those are the throws he has trouble making consistently- to Boldin there. He'd have to put a lob on that pass and put the ball out in front of Boldin, same scenario when he threw the int in Boldins direction earlier in the game.

Thats how he threw the int earlier. A pass that needed to be in front of Boldin with some arch.

Na, it's on Kap first and foremost, then the penalties, the defense (namely the mismatch/bad plays on Ward) then coaching. I have a big problem with the Gore TD penalty but most of the penalties were legit. I guess refs could call a penalty on pretty much any play in the NFL this season and maybe there's some conspiracy against the Niners (like seriously, either that or the refs are just lame) but we lost this game with 4 turnovers. The only "conspiracy" I can think of is Goodall was pissed because we didn't bench McDonald, with all the heat he's taking, so he skipped out on the game and told the refs to go hard on us? LOL

As much as i would really like to, I think that request will have to fall on the shoulders of some other folks. Thl, Ncommand....others with game rewind?? I'm headed out of town tomorrow morning and won't return til Saturday and won't be able to get to any film during that time.
GORO, here are the pass plays that the 49ers dialed up in the week 17 game from last season. ARI is primarily a man coverage team that likes to bring pressure right into the QB's face. They may not do that as much versus Kap since he can beat them with his legs.

You can see a mix of hitches (WR screens) along with clear out routes where some routes are used to clear an area for the primary WR to work (7, 11, 18=Staley catch, 24, 33) . We should also see back shoulder throws since the 49ers like to do that versus man coverage. I'd expect Stevie Johnson to prove his worth since he excels at beating man coverage.

Agreed, and another reason I'm not overly worried about last weeks game is it will take a little time for CK to get on the same page with Johnson and for the O-line to gel with Boone holding out and Davis not even playing yet. That right side of the line will be much improved over the next few weeks.

They lost their starting/pro bowl linebackers from last year. All of them. They have a better secondary now so they'll be stacking the box on us. We need to be able to establish the pass in order to establish the run. We'll win if Kap can do that. And if they keep 100 men in the box we need to be able to dink and dunk with the passing game. High percentage short throws to WR's in stride with the occasional deep ball.
