and then hire an offensive minded coach like Holmgren or Gruden?
I'd love to keep our defensive coordinators and just hire an offensive minded coach. Or will Vic follow Harbaugh?

Are we allowed to keep Vic Fangio?

I think he stays as a Head Coach.. but he'll go with Harbaugh when Jim leaves..
it's just he'll feel less secure staying as a DC, then a new HC comes along... they may not be on the same page..

technically, the assistant coaches are on individual contracts - like the head coach. So, they're not tied to a particular head coach, but the team. Generally though, when a new coach comes in, he wants to hire "his" people - that doesn't necessarily mean a change, but that he was the one who made a decision for them to be part of his staff, not an inherited staff. So, when a new coach comes in, if he already has guys who he's going to bring in on his staff, he'll let whatever coaches who are in those positions go. The rest, he'll evaluate and basically give a working interview while searching other candidates and, if he finds that he and that coach are a good fit and the coach is what he's looking for, he'll keep them.
Think of Jim Tomsula from Nolan-Singletary-Harbaugh.

There has been a lot of talk in here about why fangio shouldnt be head coach. I agree to some extent that it would be nice for the next hc to be an offensive guy so the system doesnt change if the oc leaves. However, I wonder how attractive the position of oc would be with fangio at hc. I dont think thosr benefits have been explored enough.

Yes. We allowed to keep Fangio as a defensive coordinator. .
Fangio cannot be forced to stay; he could quit.

Barrows just said fangio is under contract with the 9ers.
He also said harbaugh will need fangio cause without him his stay here in SF would have been completely different. And not in a good way.
If I'm the niners thats who I break the bank for. Fangio deserves to be paid like a head coach. IMO, fangio staying here is so important if i were jed I would do whatever it takes to retain him. he is very important. The 9ers need to break the bank for him.

Fangio cannot become the DC of an NFL team without the 49ers releasing him from his contract. He can however become an NFL HEAD Coach without their permission.

to be only offered/keep a DC position is a slap in the face to Fangio..The only way he stays is a HC job...unless we hire a big name long in the game HC..which im uneasy with since they have fallen off in the years gone by

Gruden just signed a long term deal with ESPN. He's staying with his buddy Mike Tirico.

Depends on if he's offered other HC jobs.

Fangio is gone if JH leaves unless he's offered a HC position or if a Holmgren, parcells , gruden (quits espn) type coach comes in

Fangio is under contract with the 49ers, whether Harbaugh goes or stays is irrelevant. The only ways he can leave are to take a head coaching position with another team or resign and go back to college.

Not if they are out of the playoffs. Its pretty automatic. If you have an assistant such as Donatell, the team can block him from interviewing from a DC position since assistant coaches are all pretty much the same under the rules.

Exactly how is it a slap in the face? He has had a shaky career at best up until this point as a coach. He's had some great years...and he's had some really bad ones, he ended up costing Mora his job in Indy. He was relegated to being a defensive assistant before Harbaugh hired him at Stanford.
If he stays with the 49ers, he has a steady gig with a very talented roster. Nobody owes him a head coaching position.
Pittsburgh went from Bill Cowher to Mike Tomlin without giving Dick LeBeau the time of day pretty much, and that was AFTER they won the Superbowl.....he's still with the team even though Tomlin is literally like half his age.
