Reading this thread is exactly why I would go unconventional if I was in charge. Pay fangio to be defensive head coach and pay him more money. Then pay an offensive minded guy to be the offensive head coach.
Then figure out how to make it work.
Messing up a top 10 defense because our offense sucks and we want to jettison our coach would be a mistake.
Just as it may be uneasy to find a head coach who is forced to keep a DC he may not want. Assuming fangio would stay after being passed up.

Are we allowed to keep Vic Fangio?

Exactly how is it a slap in the face? He has had a shaky career at best up until this point as a coach. He's had some great years...and he's had some really bad ones, he ended up costing Mora his job in Indy. He was relegated to being a defensive assistant before Harbaugh hired him at Stanford.
If he stays with the 49ers, he has a steady gig with a very talented roster. Nobody owes him a head coaching position.
Pittsburgh went from Bill Cowher to Mike Tomlin without giving Dick LeBeau the time of day pretty much, and that was AFTER they won the Superbowl.....he's still with the team even though Tomlin is literally like half his age.
to hire an unknown/New for HC is a slap in the face when Fangio can run the show himself
How do we know Fangio can run the show himself? I'd like Fangio to stay but I don't know if he can be a good head coach.
Nobody does. If he's a defensive guy that will hire an offensive coordinator and will hold that coordinator responsible than I would
be onboard. I'm not sure though.

Not a BAD idea at all.
I really like it.
Have an "Expert" run the D and
an "Expert" run the O
W/out an overriding philosophy like Bo Schemblecker's [sp]

why does he have to leave, he's still under contract right? tomsula should keep him, even if he was promoted over him....wasn't Fangio's interest in being a HC lukewarm at best anyways? massage his ego by making him assistant HC, but definitely KEEP FANGIO!

Might sign with the team.
But a few things can happen...
Ryans takes a job next year, and Vic takes over defense..
Ryans and Vic both get jobs next year as HC somewhere else...
Or the unthinkable, Vic falls in love working with Ryans...and decides to join him on a new team as DC..lol.
Might sign with the team.

Hope it works out. He would be a great mentor for Ryans (who's already made a name for himself)…

a very very good DC.. but also, I heard he didn't get along with Baalke because he didn't like to use rookies as much as he can... and he also did not believe in 3-4 scheme...

is he's hired as just a consultant then no need to transition to a 3-4 scheme then…we don't have the LB's and a jumbo "elephant" DE/LB hybrid just yet to implement it in the off-season on a whim

I have always liked Vic. I would love him to return. He just reminds me of my grandfather--a tough old WW2 vet, who gave no f**ks.
