And, he'd be insurance in case Ryans moves on next year.
Will Fangio be able to overcome the hill or Jed York choosing Tomsula over him though ?

Fangio would've faired better yes but not as if he was gonna turn the franchise around. The team was going into a s**t hole and Fangio had much better talent in Denver than he would've had here at the time.

He might have brought over/attracted a competent OC in 2015 though . I doubt he would put up with the OL we had... and wouldn't put up with Trent Baalke dictating who should start.

I still don't know what the hell Jed was thinking hiring Tomsula... I'm sure there was no legit interview with him.

Like Jed was just happy that Harbaugh was gone...like a little spoiled kid not having someone around who slapped their hand........yet Jed matured in two years later when they got Kyle? Weird and Hilarious.
I like the idea of Fangio in a consultant role. That would be a great mind for Ryans to lean on and learn from. Though if it's a possibility of Fangio becoming DC after Ryans assuredly becomes an HC next year, how would that even work? We run a base 4-3 defense with Wide 9 and Cover 3 principles, while Fangio runs a 3-4.

I wonder if Fangio would've advocated sticking to a more conventional power run offense, rather than trying to use more spread and read option principles for Kaepernick.
I don't see him having a role in this defense...he was great with Harbaugh, but I think that ship's sailed far away. Ryans has a mentor in James Bettcher...if it isn't broken, don't fix it, IMHO.

Fangio was all about defense winning the game...and not having the offense or special teams lose the game for the team. Kap was good at protecting the ball.

So most likely yeah, Vic would have stuck with conventional power run offense.
Didn't the Rams switch from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense when they made the switch from Phillips to Staley, the latter a Fangio disciple?

I don't think so. His ability to specifically game plan for opponents vs. all gas, no brakes and just doing what we do could be very helpful for Ryans. In addition, he could be huge with helping the secondary in pattern match schemes. He always got the most of the least talent too and always had a secondary pipeline ready to go. His experience would be invaluable. 3-4, 4-3 and W9 isn't a crutch.

The pass defense was s**t this past season. It needs fixing. Whether or not Fangio or anyone else can help remains a question, Maybe also bringing in better players. Maybe bringing in a better secondary coach. Ryans has learned a lot this year at and hopefully this offseason he will make adjustments. I'm tired of Shanahan having raw assistant coaches learn on the job and making mistakes at the team's expense, and having them leave when they are ready. On the offense, getting Anthony Lynn was huge, rather than promoting another young inexperienced coach within to take over.

The pass defense struggled at the beginning but i thought they stepped up towards the end. Thomas just needed some playing time and experience and Mosley is a stud.
if we get Verrett back our D will be a force. We just need to stay healthy and develop the young players.

Agree. Fangio is a 3-4 guy, but 3-4 and 4-3 aren't so different that Fangio can't adjust. I just like the fact that he can step in as DC if Demeco leaves and i don't think he's wanting to be Head Coach again for a while after his Bronco stint. That might help stability on the defensive coaching side for a couple of years. I personally like the Wide 9 now, and I think, to a certain extent Fangio has been moving in that direction philosophically already.

If he can make the transition to 4-3, out run defense would be absolutely insane with our LB and Dline. It's arguably better than the Harbaugh years and that's saying a lot.
