This. People need to stop coming up with these fantasies of guys making lateral moves or blowing off head coaching opportunities to come be assistants. I'd be perfectly content with Kubiak as a HC, I think he and Fangio would click together very well, similar sort of temperament.

Couldn't agree more. Might not be the flashiest move. But think it would be a great fit.

Mike was a good coach but he been living off those Superbowl wins for a long time.

I think he's another example of good head coach, bad GM.

For Shanahan to work out he has to win a Superbowl in year one. I think any other coach get a little leeway.
Back in July, you said Shanahan was very aware of the reason he was out in Denver - the poor personnel decisions in the draft & free agency. Here we are one year into this and the Redskins burned 2 high draft picks for a QB that's out in 1-year & 3rd round pick for a banged up Tackle that will be a free agent in 2 weeks. Is he still a bad GM?

"It's a little bit of a different situation. He had some stability in Denver and he had good players, but he made bad draft choice after bad draft choice. And then he chased those bad draft choices with bad free agent moves. [The Redskins] are an organization that was still lacking some depth and legit, big time Quarterbacks. They tried to patch a hole, obviously. The jury is still out on those moves and how much Mike Shanahan plays in that and how much is on Bruce Allen and the owner."

If Shanahan is the guy, I hope they have him focus on coaching, and coaching alone, let Baalke deal with the personnel stuff.

Well, Warren Sapp said Bruce Allen is nothing more than a guy that plays golf with the alumni and works the salary cap and contracts.

"(laughing). If that's the case...I've known Mike for a very long time in regards to those personnel moves and there are a lot of things you kind of look at and scratch your head and I could go through tons of them that happened in Denver which made zero sense."

For example?

"Let's start with the draft. Ashley Lelie. Really? Deltha O'Neal, who played running back in college at Cal Berkley got switched to defensive back. We drafted him in the first round. Does that truly make sense? Guys like Willie Middlebrooks. You've never heard of them. [Willie was a] defensive back from the Univ. of Minnesota that never panned out. 1st round draft choice. George Foster -1st round draft choice, who was injured his last year in college with a broken wrist and really couldn't bend his wrist. A lot of people thought he'd be available in the 4th or 5th round and we took him with the 24th pick overall in the draft. I can go on and on and on.

I heard Vic's interview was something like 6 hours long...

I dont get all tha hype of this guy everyone knowz Manning is tha 1 running tha denver offense ...

Jeez again Gase puts the schemes together he is the one that makes the offensive game plan not Manning. Do you think it's Manning or Gase in the coaches meetings during the week? Gase calls the plays (usually 2 or 3) and also gives Manning tons of time to make a correct audible based off those plays.

Manning doesn't have is "laser rocket arm" anymore so Gase as made adjustments and created a running game as well....if you honestly think Manning does everything then why pay for a OC? Why has every team in need for a HC the past two years asked to interview him? This Manning does everything crap has to stop because even Manning has stated Gase is the person behind the offense...

Why!??!?!!?! His offenses did nothing for the Texans.

4 top 10 offenses while he was coaching there. 3 Top 10 rushing offenses, 3 Top 10 Passing Offenses.

Yeah and he took a bottom ten (Yds & Scoring) Baltimore team and made them #12 in Yds and #8 in scoring.

Flacco is having one of his best years in QB rating & QBR... Kubiak has a great track record with offense...

Still, there's no way I take Kubiak over Shanahan.

Yeah I prefer Shanahan too. He brought Kubiak to the 49ers in 94 and Kubiak was the right hand man in Denver from 95 until 2005. It's like Walsh/Holmgren, Walsh/Wyche, Walsh/Hackett.... Master/student.... but Kubiak was with Shanahan for a decade...
so maybe hes the one with the playbook, not shanny. and hes gonna have better connections like someone else said, shanny's friends are all probably old as hell or retired/not interested. 49ers fans tend to think that older is better but i would argue that kubiak has been better than shanny as a head man. we all know about elway but shanahan failed miserably in washington and kubiak took an expansion team and built them into an offensive powerhouse. made shaub a beast for a few years, always had a badass run game, defense hasnt been bad as well. i think hes a great coach and hes my favorite as far as the ones were supposedly linked to

Shanny was the one with the playbook. He built a more advanced form of Walsh's WCO and I'm pretty sure Shanny was calling the shots for the Denver offense in the early years... has Kubiak the pupil surpassed his mentor? Perhaps... every situation is different. Walsh's pupil Sam Wyche left a year after the '81 championship season and came back to meet Walsh in the 1988 season Superbowl. It was Wyche the innovative pupil vs his former mentor and genius Walsh..... everyone knows the ending of that one.. Superbowl XXIII... Montana to Taylor with 34 seconds left... TD!!!! 49ers and mentor Walsh wins against the Bengals and pupil Wyche.

Also interesting to know that Wyche was the first coach to use the hurry-up as a base offense with Boomer Esiason in 1988.... The Buffalo Bills used the hurry-up or K-gun offense from 1991-1994 and made four straight Superbowls!!.... fascinating... too bad the Bills always fell short....

I like Shanny and Kubiak a lot, but I'm still in favor of going back to Holmgren.. he's more part of the tree trunk of Bill Walsh roots....

Yep. In fact this dynamic offense you speak of was so good, Andre Johnson was trying to get traded because he knew they weren't going anywhere lol.

Johnson didn't start asking for a trade until after Kubiak was fired. Also, if you look at his career, much like Shanahan seems to be make a great running back out of anybody; just ask Justin Forsett. Over 1200 rushing yards this season and he didn't become the starter until around week six.

Just imagine what Kubiak could with Gore and Hyde.

If he were OC, not HC.

Only way you get Kubiak is as a HC.

Correct. I know he's not the sexiest name out there but I think he makes the most sense for us right now. York said he wants a teacher for Kap and the offense overall (obviously) needs direction.

Speaking to that, who's better qualified than Kubiak?

I agree go Steelers
Can someone explain to me what Mike Shanahan has accomplished without a hall of fame qb in John Elway and Steve young?

He did not say teacher for Kap...he said teacher in general. Someone who can teach players and even teach coaches.

Holmgren is about to turn 67, has been out of football for awhile. A lot of the assistants he depended on throughout the years are out of football now or have one foot out the door. As good of a coach as he was, at this point I think its better to find a more long term solution.

He ruined RG3's knee.

He has had a few top 10 offenses since then... That's about it.

Denver runs virtually the same offense the Colts did when Manning was there. That is not a coincidence. I think that while Gase is very smart guy I recognize that he comes with a fair bit of uncertainty.

I won't say that he will fail without Manning but at the same time questioning his ability to win games without his HOF QB is a legitimate concern. Guys like Brady and Manning can make any coach look good.

And Manning's support for him is hardly surprising because what else is he going to say? That he sucks and he should be fired?

Rarely does a guy throw their current coach under the bus even if it's warranted.
