They could try but he's been Kubiak's guy for awhile, if he refuses to do the job, just like Fangio, its not like they could force him.

I doubt he would refuse. John Harbaugh seems like a coach you want to work for.

Holmgren is about to turn 67, has been out of football for awhile. A lot of the assistants he depended on throughout the years are out of football now or have one foot out the door. As good of a coach as he was, at this point I think its better to find a more long term solution.

I think age is certainly a factor and mental faculties will diminish over time, but despite that I think the fire still burns in Holmgren... and as long as that's true I'm not as much concerned with age:

Wisdom comes with age...and I think he's got a reservoir of wisdom and knowledge to pass along to the 49er organization. If you are looking for a long term solution, there's nothing better than to have someone impart vast knowledge to your organization...knowledge that can help for decades. To consider the passing of knowledge is truly long term thinking.

Jim Harbaugh was our sugar high... he had almost enough in him to win us a Superbowl... but it would have been nothing sustainable and we were already on the downward trend... Harbaugh's coaching tree would be made of Roman.. Chryst... Morton...would that be a foundation to build a dynasty?

As far as winning now, I think Holmgren is equally important for that. He's helped Montana, Young, Favre become great and a 6th round pick Hasslebeck become a 3-time pro-bowler. Our greatest hope is to get Kap to reach his potential. There is no other better QB mentor than Holmgren. Our offense just needs a major lift.. Harbaugh imparted his warrior spirit and that should remain with the players.... the wisdom, strategy and philosophy that Holmgren brings is the missing capstone necessary for the 49ers to become a complete team....

I see your Hasselbeck and raise it, Kubiak took Matt Schaub and helped him become a pretty damn good NFL quarterback for awhile.

This guy was a Pro-Bowl QB under Kubiak.

Same thing Walsh accomplished without a hall of fame qb
I am all for Kubiak or Shanahan. I'd be happy with either.

In terms of zone run blocking, how does that differ from power run?

Can our current OL personal make the switch to zone blocking?

Thanks for the replies!

Jeez again Gase puts the schemes together he is the one that makes the offensive game plan not Manning. Do you think it's Manning or Gase in the coaches meetings during the week? Gase calls the plays (usually 2 or 3) and also gives Manning tons of time to make a correct audible based off those plays.

Manning doesn't have is "laser rocket arm" anymore so Gase as made adjustments and created a running game as well....if you honestly think Manning does everything then why pay for a OC? Why has every team in need for a HC the past two years asked to interview him? This Manning does everything crap has to stop because even Manning has stated Gase is the person behind the offense...

Denver runs virtually the same offense the Colts did when Manning was there. That is not a coincidence. I think that while Gase is very smart guy I recognize that he comes with a fair bit of uncertainty.

I won't say that he will fail without Manning but at the same time questioning his ability to win games without his HOF QB is a legitimate concern. Guys like Brady and Manning can make any coach look good.

And Manning's support for him is hardly surprising because what else is he going to say? That he sucks and he should be fired?

Rarely does a guy throw their current coach under the bus even if it's warranted.

INDY threw a bunch of pick plays?? they threw the ball down field wayyyy more with Wayne and Harrison then they do in DEN. Manning isn't close to the same QB physically as he was back in INDY...they don't run the same offense because Manning clearly can't make those down the field throws anymore, but Gase has made adjustments to this....He has also had to deal with injuries to his line and play makers all year, yet they are still in the top 5 in offense.

Throw in that McCoy and him worked with Tebow and created a playoff team with him and yes I believe he will be a good HC in this league and is the best choice out of the current candidates for the long term.

And it isn't just Manning that says he can coach... http://mmqb.si.com/2014/12/02/nfl-mike-martz-adam-gase-mike-mccoy-mike-mccarthy-best-offensive-minds/

Why has just about every team in the past 2 years asked to interview him? I think most GMs have a better understanding on who can lead a team then most fans lol...

The biggest problem is not age or whether he can coach or not. The Niners as far as I've read have not shown the slightest bit of interest and yet his name keeps getting brought up.

Walsh selected his two hall of fame qbs. Shanahan was gifted two. Nice argument.

Joe Gibbs is still the only coach that comes to mind winning big consistently with out a HOF qb.
