Walsh and Shanny would of never had Jose Cortez on this team you bum

Joe Gibbs is still the only coach that comes to mind winning big consistently with out a HOF qb.

Looks like the Shannahan father/son move i speculated about prior to the season ending is gaining some momentum.

I also wouldn't be upset with Kubiak.

Everyone else whos names are being thrown about wouldnt really get me excited. Of all the other names, i would probably prefer the in house hire of Vic Fangio.
Has to be someone that want Kap as our QB and so far 2 like Kap Mike S and Rex Ryan

I like Shanny and Kubiak a lot, but I'm still in favor of going back to Holmgren.. he's more part of the tree trunk of Bill Walsh roots....

Holmgren is about to turn 67, has been out of football for awhile. A lot of the assistants he depended on throughout the years are out of football now or have one foot out the door. As good of a coach as he was, at this point I think its better to find a more long term solution.

I think age is certainly a factor and mental faculties will diminish over time, but despite that I think the fire still burns in Holmgren... and as long as that's true I'm not as much concerned with age:
http://mmqb.si.com/2014/07/16/mike-holmgren-retirement/

Wisdom comes with age...and I think he's got a reservoir of wisdom and knowledge to pass along to the 49er organization. If you are looking for a long term solution, there's nothing better than to have someone impart vast knowledge to your organization...knowledge that can help for decades. To consider the passing of knowledge is truly long term thinking.

Jim Harbaugh was our sugar high... he had almost enough in him to win us a Superbowl... but it would have been nothing sustainable and we were already on the downward trend... Harbaugh's coaching tree would be made of Roman.. Chryst... Morton...would that be a foundation to build a dynasty?

As far as winning now, I think Holmgren is equally important for that. He's helped Montana, Young, Favre become great and a 6th round pick Hasslebeck become a 3-time pro-bowler. Our greatest hope is to get Kap to reach his potential. There is no other better QB mentor than Holmgren. Our offense just needs a major lift.. Harbaugh imparted his warrior spirit and that should remain with the players.... the wisdom, strategy and philosophy that Holmgren brings is the missing capstone necessary for the 49ers to become a complete team....

The biggest problem is not age or whether he can coach or not. The Niners as far as I've read have not shown the slightest bit of interest and yet his name keeps getting brought up.

Fair point. Shanahan's name didn't come up until later. Kubiak's name just came up. I think the 49ers are doing a comprehensive search so I'm not sure there is a short list just yet.

Leaning in this direction as well. I love the Shanahan/Kubiak WCO scheme, so I wouldn't mind either one. If we go with a defensive guy, I'd like to see Fangio get the job.

How can this happen?? Kyle is the OC in Cleveland and they can deny any interviews on a lateral move (like we did with Vic in Washington)...in no way would this benefit Cleveland and it wouldn't happen.

Also there is no way Mike becomes the OC under his son lol.

If Cleveland releases Kyle Shanahan why in the world would we want him as our OC??????? If they want him out that means he is a problem.

Fangio

Wouldnt be my first choice. BUT, i would take him over Rex Ryan, Quinn, Bowles, etc.

IMO right now Fangio is likely their fallback option if they cant secure one of the bigger names on the market. Same with all the interview with defensive minded coaches.

I think the thought is, that if they cant land an offensive minded coach that shares their vision (Shanahan, Kubiak) that the fallback should be a Defensive minded coach that can get the most out of the defense until the Offense catches up.

Personally i would not want any Defensive minded coach as my HC regardless. I just think if they go that route, Fangio would be the best option.
What if:

1. Vic Fangio HC

2. Mike Shanny OC

Wouldn't suck

Idgaf how much of a "fan" Shanny is of Kap. Harbaugh was a fan too and he's no longer the coach. Not a shot at Kap of Shanny, but the fact he "likes" Kap dorsnt mean s**t. I'm sure lots of coaches like Kap. The question is which one can coach him.

Am I missing something....Kyle didn't get fired in CLE, right? I thought they were really happy with him.
