If the 49ers miss out on Adam Gase, has to be either Fangio or Tomsula, right? Not sure what York's alternative plan is, if he has one.

It's clear niners don't see vic as a HC (NFL seems to agree with this as well).
If you make a head coaching decision largely based on what a certain assistant coach thinks of it, you're already a terrible GM.
Exactly....baalke seems to be cold and calculated in every thing he does. I'm sure they want to retain vic, but I'm also sure they have contingency plans in the event he wants out.

It would most likely be one of those two. I doubt they want to wait it out for the Quinn sweepstakes.

Right, what are the 49ers going to do without a guy who was incredibly mediocre prior to coming the 49ers. I like Fangio, I think he's pretty good, but I also think the talent on this team as well as the offensive philosophy has helped him out quite a bit.
Prior to the 49ers, Fangio was known for defenses that got worse every single year, I hope he stays but if he has a bug up his butt, he can hit bricks.
Who fails for 12 years then all of a sudden becomes a great coach lol?...if you don't think the talent on the team is a HUGE part in his success then I don't know what to tell ya

Yeah and if Vic leaves we still got Donnatell and Tomsula. Not worried.
Honestly, Vic leaving a defense as talented as ours while making big bucks is kinda dumb. And if its because he didn't get to decide who the coach was, well he can bounce then. Its not like like Fangio's defenses have always been impenetrable. He looked like a savant this year in large part due to how much inept our offense was.
If he stays I believe we can contend for a SB with a more potent offense. If he leaves I still think we can do the same thing.

I was hoping that if the 49ers went with a young guy they'd pick McDaniels, since he might have learned from his Denver mistakes and it's not uncommon for a coach to fail before becoming a success.
But okay, it's (probably) Gase, let's see what he can do. Now just wonder if they're really going to lose Fangio...

I'm not going to worry about it if they go with Gase. Having never been a HC isn't necessarily a problem. If they can keep most of the defense going either by retaining Fangio or, if he goes, promoting Tomsula to DC, then maybe the team will profit from a bold new offensive approach. Elway has said he thinks Gase is a genius. Peyton has called him "the smartest man I know."
""Adam is a lot like me in that he's always thinking of how we can do something better or different – or both," Manning told the New York Times. "And he has an almost photographic memory. He can recall a defensive scheme we say from eight games back and remember our exact formation and the play called."
Gase evidently has a great ability to recognize weaknesses in defenses and exploit them.
From MMQB: "Martz – the offensive coordinator in St. Louis when the Rams were "The Greatest Show on Turf" – called Gase one of the NFL's three best offensive minds, along with Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy and Chargers head coach Mike McCoy. According to Martz, each is adept at coming up with innovative game plans and play calls."
If the Niners can retain most of their great defense and at the same time, add an aggressive, more explosive offense, this might turn out well after all. And this is from a fan who thought the idea of getting rid of Harbaugh was one of the craziest things he'd ever heard.

Why would it likely be those two? There are other candidates out there oh like the Shanahans! I am pretty confident that Baalke has a plan B,C, and D with both coaching positions!
