I certainly didn't count on them going with Tomsula, a guy they could have hired 4 years ago if Jed had such a massive boner for him.

He needed to get his stadium built. Tomsula wouldn't have been the splash to do that.

You guys said the same thing when they hired Nolan and Sing. Do you really believe this is a good hire? Its natural for the fans to react with anger. Dude didn't even get a single interview request for a HCing job from any team.

This. Some of the same people that were cheering the Nolan and Singletary hires are now cheering this hire. Tomsula is a very good coach, a tremendous DL coach but I can't help but feel underwhelmed at the prospect of him being a head coach, particularly since nobody else was interested in hiring him, even for a DC position.

NFL teams weren't even interested in this guy as a potential defensive coordinator, 49ers made him a head coach.

He's hiring Trestman. Not as mad now.

What's important now is who the coordinators are.

Exactly, get some good coordinators and let them do their jobs. Tomsula is a good motivator and that's the main job of a HC.

This. The coordinators game-plan, and prepare the players. They report to him. Bill Gates didn't know much about computers, but I think he did a pretty good job running Microsoft. Just like the Yorks know nothing about the NFL or football, and look what they,,,,,,,,oh, bad example.

Maybe should have tried him out as DC for a few years. See if he can coach.

This is York... He doesnt do the smart thing...

Exactly why is Adam Gase a much better option than Tomsula?

One of these guys has been a coach for over 30 years and the other is 36 years old.

One has been in SF for over a decade and has ALWAYS been highly regarded. The other was here for a year as an assistant to Mike Martz.

Say what you will about not being an offensive coach, I gotta tell you, I don't hate this hire. I'd like it if Fangio stayed, but I don't have an issue with Tomsula. Would I have liked a "sexier" pick? Sure, but "sexy" doesn't win games.

What matters now is who gets hired in the coordinator positions. If it does end up being Trestman, we won't have to worry about him being plucked as a HC anytime soon.

tomsula hasnt been with the 49ers over a decade. and trestman could easily decide to go back to canada where he would get HC job

Wow...my math way off today. You are correct...2007.

Doubt he'd leave an NFL Coordinator job to be a HC in CFL.

Its all about the quarterback. We have a supremely talented QB who regressed considerably and is running in a number of directions trying to get coached up. Then we fire a very successful coach and the owner implies that the team was not getting "coached up" enough by the current head coach / staff.

Then we waste a lot of time interviewing approximately 3,459 potential candidates. Then we rush out to Denver panicked trying to bring in the hot OC candidate du jour. And out of nowhere - they decide to hire the inhouse guy. And not the inhouse guy who was in charge of the defense. But the guy behind the guy, behind the guy, behind the guy who no one even knew interviewed for the job.

I just want someone to coach up Kap. I can't watch the abortive offense anymore. The consistent delay of game calls, the issue with red zone playcalling, the garbage that we've been for years on offense.

So that's why people are upset. The team fired the successful football coach and promoted the internal lovable character actor.

So was Tomsula like our 10th choice?

I guess they were turned down by everyone, and Trent bumped into Tomsula this morning and said "Want to be a Head Coach"?

If he didn't agree, Trent was going to ask the Water Boy.

Tomsula was the first and only choice. This whole coaching "search" has been a sham.

I dont think it was a Sham. To me it seems like they did due diligence, gase almost won them over, but they ultimately decided there guy was the right choice. Im not thrilled with it, but i dont think it was a scam. This is the reason they interviewed defensive candidates as well. Sure they may not have been as open minded as they would be if they didnt have a candidate in mind, but it sounds like Gase had a shot, and couldnt sway the FO enough to move off their guy.

Tomsula has been coaching since he was 16 years old huh.

Was about to point out the same lol

I get Marvin's point, but years experience does not automatically mean he's the better hire. There have been many coaches with less experience that succeeded as coaches. It's a matter of being the right fit, and I feel like Tomsula's most redeeming quality in the eye's of Baalke/York is that he's a familiar face who will be easy to work with. I'm not convinced Tomsula was the best overall football mind available.

The proper fit for this team, in my opinion, was an offensive coach to fix this abysmal offense. I have no doubts about how well liked Tomsula is, and he's a great defensive coach, but that's not what we needed. I'm hoping he hits a grandslam with his offensive coaching staff, and we get some serious playmakers.

Most of the candidates in this thread were better options than Tomsula
Well I know what I'm doing right after work. Going to the local waterhole and drowning my sorrows
