Not true at ALL.

My first preference was for Harbaugh to stay. Once it became obvious that wasn't going to happen, the second choice was an offensive HC (Shanahan, Gase or McDaniels). The irony is that Jed/Baalke probably just killed their guy's HC career by choosing to go in this direction...

Its safe to say that record wise, whomever followed Harbaugh was not likely to repreat 44-19-1, 5-3 (playoffs), 1 SB appearance and 3 straight NFC Championship Games. Even if he had stayed and their wasn't the acrimony with the FO, it is unlikely that Harbaugh could have repeated or improved on that record, so the only way for Jed/Baalke to win with letting Harbaugh go is to do the one thing Harbaugh didn't accomplish, win a SB, in the next 2-3 years. If they do that, people will forget if the regular season isn't as good or if there is an early playoff exit, etc. That's why I thought early in this process that Shanahan would be the choice to make one last SB push over the next 3 years before finding the coach for the long term after that.

By naming Tomsula as HC now, it means he is going to be compared to Harbaugh and the only way he comes out on top is by winning a SB in the next 3 years. If that doesn't happen, his tenure will be looked at as a failure and if the bottom falls out, he'll never be a HC in the NFL again.

The alternative would have been to go outside the organization to bring in the next HC and either promote Tomsula to DC or keep him on as the DL coach if Fangio stayed or the new coach wanted his own DC. If that coach brought a SB to SF, Jed/Baalke win. If he didn't, then they could promote Tomsula as part of the 2017 or 2018 coaching search and Tomsula would be the guy who replaced the guy that replaced Harbaugh, a much easier job.

Maybe Tomsula will flourish and prove me wrong but I believe his supporters have set him up to fail in their zeal to make him the "anti-Harbaugh" HC.

And hiring a head coach with NO head coaching experience, they can chant "Who's got the answers for us? Nooooooobody!"

This is the worst rebuild ever....

I was afraid we would get an inexperienced coordinator....we ended up getting an inexperienced DL coach....


HAHAHAH if you though those seats were empty last year Jud York, wait until we start 0-6, you'll have to pay people to show up...

No one knows. But its done. Time to get behind the guy. He has had success with every opportunity he has ever been given, at this point all we can do is get behind him and hope he is the answer. BLUDGEON!

It doesn't even matter because Tomsula was the only candidate that pretty much guaranteed that Fangio was gone. I was optimistic that Fangio would stick around even with another guy like Bowles, Gase or even Shanahan but getting passed up by a guy that is currently under you, yeah that's not happening.

Can Donatell make the defense the same as it is?
