NFL Network analyst and former 49ers cornerback Eric Davis, 47, said players eventually sniff out coaches who are out of their depth. They did so with Singletary and will do the same if Tomsula doesn't have the skills to be a successful head coach, he said.

"You're dealing with professionals," Davis said. "Not kids. Not high-school kids. Not college kids. They actually understand their job. They study just as much as the coaches and they understand when you're setting them up for failure. That's, ultimately, why Mike Singletary failed. The guys reached a point where the motivational speeches didn't work. They were like 'Teach me.'"

One way or another, I think the players will figure this one out quickly - after all, the players already know JT.
