You have to be smart to build a perennial winner. Smart is not trying to out power everybody at this level. Smart is not trying to have your quarterback win with his legs instead of his head. Smart is not simplifying the offense every year. Jim Harbaugh was a fighter, but he never outsmarted Anybody in the NFL, and his fall was inevitable.

Smart is taking a crap roster and giving yourself three years to build a powerhouse. That means you don't waste draft capital reaching for a quarterback in year one, especially when you have a top 5 guy on the hook free of draft capital. Smart is having an offense that makes a defense cover the whole field. Smart is speed. Smart is quick twitch separating players. Smart is an offense that targets a defensive player in scheme that makes whichever way he goes wrong. Smart is having a qurterback with a quick enough mind and
offensive knowledge to make him pay for being wrong. Smart is making the start of every play unreadable as to whether it is a run or pass. Smart is building the roster with players that have a chance to help win championships in a few years, even if that means placeholders fill positions in year one. Smart is coaching attention to detail, such as insisting the OL holds the run blocks on play action. Smart is making sure everyone knows the importance of the details of their jobs and understands why they must do it, and not just to do it. Smart is holding people accountable. Smart is not having favorites. Performance rules, so everyone has a shot. Smart is setting defenses up with the same look but different play for the home run or critical first down.

Smart is John Lynch.

Smart is Kyle Shanahan.

You forgot a couple of things though that are very vital,

Smart is having a Gm that doesn't hoard cow dung, Smart is drafting for your coach and the team and not for selfish reasons. Smart is not trying to reinvent the wheel. Smart is when theres a 3 year window, you draft healthy players. Smart is not talking about Amari, Bechem but actually going out there and getting them. Smart is not hoarding draft picks that were injured and helped no one.

Smart is not draft Marcus Lattimore who said it himself, wtf would you draft me? Smart is knowing you had Justin Smith and is getting old, you draft someone that can help him, not sit on a bench and watch Cowboy play with one arm. Smart is not undermining your head coach.

Smart is getting a Qb after you got rid of Alex. Smart is understanding if your going to draft garbage, nine out of ten your going to get garbage. Smart is replenishing the starting defense. Smart is drafting skilled players. Smart is not having your best wr drafted be named Kyle Williams.

I'm still bewildered how Harbaugh got them to play to that level with a GM who worked against him?

sooooo, what you're saying is we finally have "smart" for the first time since the 2002 when BW was still with us(RIP)? Sounds about right, haha. YAY

Totally. LOL

Smart is going back to your roots and franchise identity. FO restructured how it used to be. Best OC in the game who runs a WCO and is an outstanding teacher to be HC. Top 10 picks/talent on defense added. 4-3_under scheme returned as well.

Now, can Kyle build up that coaching staff like the old WCO tree... start his own branch under dad?

dunno how the season is gonna go--though I'm guessing it will be better than many expect--but to this point it has been so great watching ShanaLynch rebuild. They did more in one off season FA than Baalke did in his entire tenure as GM. Same with the draft--done with a purpose, not just to acquire players and picks.
Smart is fun to watch and should lead to future success as well.
OND, that has been my sentiment, too, almost always met with jeers and reasons why not. I have been expectant for going on near 17 yrs now, but there is something different going on this yr..and it feels like finally we got that OC/HC that we haven't had since way back there. Likewise, same for GM. It looks...it feels...well, professional...unlike anything we have had since....well, Mooch. But even he doesn't remind me of Kyle. Kyle reminds me of the HC we had here...When he was picking up footballs as the ball boy...as well as watching his dad call the O.

Don't know if that's what it is, but that sure is the way it feels. It will become a lot clearer once TC and PS start.

It appears that ShanaLynch recognize that there's more to a "football player" than stats and measureables. They're working to change the culture, not just the schemes and personnel. They want more than just size or strength or speed (tho looking for those things too.) Smarts, toughness, dedication, etc. Beathard showed he's got those, Trubisky still in doubt--as an example.

Lynch is the greatest, and Shannahan is the next Bill Walsh.

And Jed is the next Eddie D.

It's been a complete 180...turned left on highway 4949 and heading home.

You want to know why Kirk loves Kyle?

In the draft, Kyle knew we'd get Beathard in the 4th round...Lynch talked about how Kyle was a bit pissed at him for moving up into the 3rd to ensure Kyle got his QB but Kyle didn't want to put 3rd round pressure on Beathard.

Kyle will raise his QB's right...take good care of them.
I also think smart is going after guys that fit your system and even going after some older players that can help teach your system.

Amen, that was clearly their plan...replace all the veterans we lost in 2015 and reestablish the culture and install the systems.

the fact that Shanahan found Cousins and developed him as a FQB is proof that he recognizes QB talent and knows how to coach it up. That's good enough for me and should be good enough for anyone smart enough not to blindly follow the annual "QB popularity poll" aka the draft. It also gives reason to believe he can do it again, an this time without the stupid interference of Dan Snyder ("must have RGIII") or other mental midgets like him.

And he wanted to do that with Carr for Cleveland. He would have turned that place around. More mental midgets "must have Johnny Football".
