And Grant Cohn is writing positive pieces and predicting a 9-7 season.

Hell really has frozen over!

Of what, milk?
so many positive changes on offense and defense that its hard to focus in on just one thing.

the defense has had a great influx of talent and the new scheme should make better use of some talent that was already here. questions remain but it should be exciting to watch this defense get after it.
.
the offense got some new talent also--and jettisoned some dead weight. Most importantly, we now have an OC well-versed in and dedicated to the WCO. it may take awhile for the offensive players to completely absorb and fully execute the WCO, but I, for one, am willing to be patient--it will be worth the wait.

so lots to look forward to this year! imho. "thar's GOLD in them thar hills!"

I really like the decisions on QB so far--taking Beathard in the 3ed instead of gambling/wasting an early round pick on one of the "potential" FQBs in this draft. and the beauty of how its shaped up is that we may still get Cousins next year, and we accumulated extra draft picks for a much stronger QB class next year as well. pure genius by John KLynch and his FO, giving the team lots of different options to use in finding that FQB!

I agree. With regards to franchise QB's, I like our position. I'd *love* to have Cousins, a developing CJ that will push cousins, and another top of the line draft pick in the mould of a Steve Young. I.e. a guy that can run 4.4 40 and throw 75 yards on a line. With Cousins and CJ in front of him, he can take his time to develop and become a true WCO QB that passes more than he runs.

But again, as much as I love offense and I love Kyle as an offensive mind, thank god we have John Lynch there to ground them into the reality that championships are won by defense.
WTF? No bump after last week?

-Thought the team really made some strides last week, especially on D

-If Hoyer has just a decent game they probably would have won. It started bad for him on his first pass, missing a wide open Goodwin 15-20 yards down the field

-Hyde and Breida showed well and could be a promising tandem going forward

-Garcon continues to show he'll be that surehanded, tough, possession WR but otherwise this team really lacks a playmaking WR. I like Taylor, both in the slot and returning punts. Seems to be adjusting to the NFL game very well. TE Kittle looks very promising, blocking and receiving...just needs to stay healthy

-The OL rebounded well from last game - a big part of this was Tomlinson already showing he's fitting in well and a no-doubt upgrade over Beadles. Wish the C Kilgore was better - he continues to show average-to-below average C play - but maybe he improves (such as in protection calls) as he gets more comfortable with this scheme. Overall, I liked the run and pass blocking, especially against one of the tougher front sevens and in such a hostile environment (no false starts?)

-The D line displayed some of the talent it has and that will only become more frequent as these guys (especially the young guys) get more refined and get more reps in this scheme. The depth on the D line was also great to see...the rookie Jones got quite a few snaps and was effective/held his own on the inside

-When Foster gets back, this D will be that much better, faster, etc. He'll also put Ray-Ray back on the bench (he's a good back-up but that's about it). Bowman, we saw the good and the bad/post-injuries LB play. I do like his veteran presence in the middle; however, Foster is badly needed to help this group play faster. As for Harold, I first thought he was kind of a ghost out there...but after watching it a 2nd time you see him holding his side down, being strong on the edge, and allowing other guys to make the tackle after a short or no gain. I know the jury is still out on him but he's still very young does show promise at times

-The secondary did well for the most part...Williams was all over the field and held up well covering the tough (the punk?) Baldwin. I know Robinson gave up the winning TD but had a pretty good game otherwise (gotta catch that INT hitting you in the numbers, though). Same with Johnson - did well and stuck his nose in there tackling. The safeties impressed and gave Seattle WRs and TEs something to think about when coming over the middle (Tartt in particular). That pass in the end zone from Wilson to McEvoy...yes, it was a drop as has been pointed out, but who's to say he hangs on anyway as he was outstretched and about to get rocked. Reid looks like a different player this year and was having another good game...really hoping it's just a three-week thing with his knee. Ward was very active and impressive considering he missed pretty much all of TC and the preseason. Stay healthy, Ward - I want to see what you got in this D scheme

If this D can keep it up and play consistently at a similar level as last week, I like the team's chances vs. some of these teams coming up on the schedule (Rams, maybe Cards - not impressed w/ them, Colts, Bears, Texans, etc.). The O of course does have to do its part - it has to have some long, sustained drives that result in 7 and not just 3 - the D needs this and hopefully will not again this year play as many snaps as it did this last game.

All in all, like many, I was encouraged by last week's game but also very disappointed in the L. Let's see if the team can keep building and get better each week - both on O and D.
I like what some pieces of the defense are doing and what I see from our backs + garcon

hoyer gives me a sad

Hoyer is doing us a favor. We need a QB next year.

I hear you about Hoyer...he HAS to get better, right? I'm thinking this Thursday's game vs. the Rams gets him and the O going.

Thanks for the reminder, Giedi...i mentioned early on that i loved the positioning that kyle adn john put us in. Good relations with cousins, should he prove to be real deal, aka, FR QB. Or, we have an extra pick in rd 2 giving us two there, plus our own 1 and 3....so three picks in the top 64 and another in rd 3. No way of knowing where those picks are. Play out the yr like this and we are looking at a ton of big early picks. But i don't think that happens. We play better, middle of group or thereabouts. So we still ahve ability to pickup a FR QB if kyle sees one he likes for a pocket passer. LIke this last yr, that guy could be one of the top touts or could be a CJ , way off the radar. No way of knowing. Thing is there are only 3 ways to entertain obtaining a Qb. Our own pick, FA , where we buy one, or by bringing a potential FR QB along.....CJ. And we are positioned to do any one of the three.

That's the good news. Bad news is top tout , Darnold looked like doo doo in the 5 hr UT/USC marathon game.SC won, but Ehlinger a freshman at UT outplayed Darnold and Ehilinger played bad. Sooo...there are other guys out there from WYO, UCLA and a couple others. Still need to see those. And then Cousins produces a bomb in game 1, and plays better in game 2. So that is undecided too. Game 1 scared me of Cousins. I am willing to hold off on a decision, but that was not good. Of course, we all have that one bad day.

Still the overarching point is that Shalyn have us well positioned to draft or move up in draft if need be, we got a potential FR QB we are bringing along in CJ, and we have as good a shot at cousins as anyone, but first have to be sure he is the one. I thought he was until i saw game one, the first bad game I've seen him in. So no one is in better shape to get a FR QB except for the one or two teams who go winless or win 1 this yr. That wont' be us.l That's also good news, meaning we are going to turn this around...and soon.
To me the arrow is trending upwards. Looks like the 49ers are looking for that "Formula" ,Great D play ,great Special teams play, and a sprinkle of offense.

We addressed the front seven, now it's time to address the offense. I think Shanalynch are doing a good job, we just need a couple of more drafts and free agent signings and we'll be on our way. I think in year three, we'll be back to competing for the division again.
