i would take the nolan sr years. playoffs three years in a row. we never tackled this bad under either nolan. 4 win team

Reviewing the offensive film will be easier because most passing plays will consist of Beathard dropping back, looking around, then getting sacked.

The Nolan Sr. years were the most disappointing of my 9er fandom. He was just good enough to beat bad teams but always lost in the playoffs because he played a bend don't break defense and a very unimaginative offense. Tough teams but just good enough to lose when it counted. ARGH!

Shanny's offense.
I would not count this team out just yet. I know it's real easy to do so after losing our QB -- but if there is a silver lining it's this: I think Beathard is going to surprise a few people, including the most ardent of 49er fans. Joe Montana looked like crap during his first season. He improved DRAMATICALLY under Walsh in Year 2. They were still losing, but you could see the promise of what was to come.

Now, I'm not going to compare Beathard to Montana. I don't think Lynch or Shanny saw Beathard as the "answer" at QB. But this is his second year in the Shanny system. He's had two full offseasons and two full training camps to immerse himself in Shanahan's offensive scheme. This is when the light bulb begins to click on.

So, my positive feeling for today is don't give up on Good Ship 49er just yet. Yes, it may seem like it struck an iceberg and is now slowly beginning to sink. I think Beathard is going to surprise a great many of us.

Our problem is on defense. It looked pretty good against Minnesota, but has now collapsed in about six straight quarters of play. The unit played horribly in the second half against the Lions and absolutely stunk up the joint in KC. Our defense is not that bad. They will improve. I hope.
Nick. Bosa.
Beathard is like iron. He takes a beating and if you hit him hard enough he turns to steel.

Yep. It was starting to click.

This

Only way to go now is tank...team has to take advantage of league giving first pick to the worst team. This does not happen in almost any league worldwide, and this is how some of the great teams were built, #1 picks can be franchise changers (like the spurs after robinson got injured, panthers with newton, giants with eli, orlando with howard, rams with pace, colts with peyton, and so on), except when you have idiot nolan, who is stupid enough to choose smith over rodgers because he "obeyed him".

Winning meaningless games like the one chip kelly won going for 2 in the 4th against the rams are the most harmful, since this prevented us from taking a game changer like garrett. lynch, in this scenario, did the best he could with a team so depleted, getting two picks, and he nailed it with foster (if he stays trouble-free), but getting solomon instead of adams was a mistake. In the past draft, I think he rushed to trade away brown, he could probably traded down and still get great dbs (one of our key needs since rogers started to decline after sb) like james, alexander or he could have picked fitzpatrick.

Yesterday's was a terrible dose of bad luck, but lynch's job is not without faults. He had some ups and downs, as described. Best and only way to go now is full tank mode this season. With a #1-3 pick, we could possibly add a missing piece to be a playoffs contender next season, if jimmy g and mckinnon come back 100% from their injuries.

Interesting take. The three worst defenses in the NFL so far? KC, NE, NO. SF is 24th. However, they are 10th against the run. They are bad against passing due to no pass rush.

I'm hoping the very tough Beathard takes jump up next week, but with much trepidation!
The Silver lining is that Jimmy's injury (which truly sucks) will take away all the fair weather fan's notions that the team will compete for a Super Bowl this year and they can get back to the process of building the team for sustained, long term success without people whining about why they aren't winning more games. It means they will be able to develop their young players and find out where they need still need to improve and deciding if they have the right guys on their coaching staff, outside of Shanahan obviously. By the time next season rolls around they will have a core of young guys versed in the system they are playing in with a couple of years of experience with what's involved in winning at this level. They will probably have a decent enough draft position that they can target whatever area of need they feel has to be addressed and, hopefully, will have laid the foundation for a team that will be in a position to compete regularly for the division title, and the championship

This sets us back another year... in order to build you need to have JG out there.. WHY in the hell did this have to happen... i have no positiveness today..... Only joy I have to look forward to is a Cowboys implosion
This thread is for intentionally unaware optimists. Sorry, but there is no silver lining after what happened yesterday.

Well, they were. But, our best DB is also injured now.

This thread is for positive people, as it says in the title. If you don't feel that way, fine. But don't come in here to take shots at posters who have a different attitude.
