Silver Lining:
Next year Jimmy Garoppolo under center with a backfield of a more experienced Matt Breida and Jet McKinnon in the open field terrorizing linebackers. Juice blocking for both backs and also a safety net for Jimmy if the opposing team somehow finds a way to cover the RBs.
We really didn't see Jimmy with Marquise Goodwin this year, but what we saw in the KC game opened up the field for the rest of the offense. Remains to be seen who will be on the opposite field of Marquise, but I am confident that Dante Pettis will be a very good receiver. We'll still have Trent Taylor and Richie James in the slot. Jimmy seemed to really target George Kittle in the 3 games this season. So far he was targeted by Jimmy 20 times this season, extrapolate that number over a season it becomes 107 targets, so I expect Kittle to be dynamic in this offense next year when defenses will be struggling to figure out how to guard all of the RBs out of the backfield Marquise on a go route, Dante Pettis working the outside, and Kittle streaking over the middle. We have 3/5 of a line, but clearly need to upgrade the guard positions and find a future replacement for the great Joe Staley.
So far this defense has struggled this season, but there are pieces to it that are very intriguing. In the trenches we have one of the best defensive linemen in the league in DeForest Buckner and he's still getting better. There are some very good complementary pieces in Sheldon Day, DJ Jones, and Julian Taylor. Next year, we'll see what we have in Kentavius Street. The linebacker corps is where we're looking very good at in the future. The tandem of Fred Warner as MLB and Reuben Foster at WLB for the forseeable future has me very excited. Obviously there are some things to be down on, but this is the silver lining thread.
- If the 49ers end up as bad as most of us seem to believe, then we probably end up with a top 5 pick.
- Thinking about our full team next year and depending how the rest of this year shapes up for our division it's arguable that we may be better than both AZ and SEA. That's 4 games right there. Also, if we end up last in our division then we play the last place team in the NFC East and the NFC North. We also play the NFC South and the AFC North, so teams like the Bucs, Browns, and Bengals. So, we
MAY have an easier schedule, relatively speaking.
- Cap room for next year will be $65,456,149 according to Jason Hurley via
LINK. If we can use this cap space to lure some free agents and plug up some of our defensive deficiencies and guard positions then we'll be a better team going forward.
- Free Agents / Draft: A premier edge rusher and another to come in on obvious passing situations, a SAM linebacker to go along with Foster and Warner, somehow fix the secondary and complete the restoration of the OLINE.
Silver lining is next year we come back as a more experienced team, an upgraded team, a more complete and healthy team.
