I miss Madden and Sumerall calling games. The calm play by play voice of Sumerall and the sudden loud color commentating of Madden made the games fun to watch. I'll never forget the 1994 NFC Championship game when William Floyd scored the touchdown to make it 21-0 in first quarter. Madden was so blown away he creamed his pants. Buck and Aikman are amateurs compared to those two.

Probably the most intense 49er run ever

That was a great opener.....never forget seeing them in the gold pants again, Jerrys second return and Hearst saving the day. 1998 is still statistically the best WCO ever (425 ypg), just wish the defense could have held up....even still, woulda loved to get a chance to play that whole Atlanta playoff game with Hearst.

Opening day with an inexperienced RG and RT. That seems familiar...

Also, its still crazy that of the 11 defensive starters in that game, only 4 were starters the next year (Brown, Stubblefield, McDonald, and Davis). That 94 defense overall is stuff of legends.

Lost to chicago 20-28, turned the ball over 4 times
Lost to Rams 10-13, 2 turnovers
Lost to SD, 3 turnovers

honorable mentions
our home loss to SEA, 3 TO
lost to the Raiders, 2 TO, mostly lost because our CB's got hurt and they gave up 3 TD to a rookie QB

15 turnovers in 8 L
7 turnovers in 8 W
wow weird!

Yet I see some people think coaches should be the ones making plays.

We hold onto the ball and win just 3 of those games they go 11-5.
Bummer
WTGJ

Should have 10 Super Bowls by now.

Just watched the Patriots Belichick "Do Your Job" special on NFLN.

What did Belichick say at the end??

"There's a saying that players win games and coaches lose them......and I think there's a lot of truth to that"
This was the changing of the guard...

1979 at NO

Being that this was '79, this game was a loss. However, it's always interesting seeing the WCO in its infancy. Steve DeBerg is at QB and Paul Hofer had 147 yards rushing.

Agree, that's the game I'll always remember as the Niners "coming out party" to the league as the Steelers hadn't lost at home to an NFC team in quite a few seasons.

Speaking of niners-steelers, would have been nice if refs wouldn't have butchered that PI call in 1984. Would have been nice to have the opportunity to go for a perfect season with the juggernaut '84 team.

Everything about this post was perfect. Football hasn't been the same for me without John and Pat.

Buck and Aikman, Nantz and Simms (I preferred Gumble and Simms) aren't close.

Also, it's weird that no better footage of Hearst's 96 yarder is readily available except for that terrible "Best Damn Sports Show" rip.

I've gotta about 45 niner games in my CPU and I've had no luck finding the '98 opener. I want it bad though because it kinda represents the last opener of the dynasty days.

NFL Network re-aired that game in summer 2008 and I may actually have it recorded onto my old computer. I'll do my best to find it and send a copy your way.

Kevin Smith's youtube channel is great for the old games. I find myself spending hours on end watching games, even the ones we lost or ones that didn't involve us.
