Jerry Rice made a verbal mistake using the word "stickum" which was the name for the nasty s**t that would be all over the ball, uniform, gloves, everywhere. Rice used a spray that made his gloves more tacky. It didn't come off his gloves and coat the ball in ick, or all over his uniform, or any of that s**t the actual product stickum used by the Raiders did.
What he used was not stickum. What he did was legal at the time. What the PFT guys and everyone else bashing Rice in the media is doing is what they ALWAYS do. Run with and pump up the sensationalism to get clicks and people upset.

The majority of people who comment on PFT are f**king morons who we'd all be better off had they been hit by a bus this morning and wiped from the face of the planet.

You mean you had some respect at one time, amazingly, and are now losing it?
No respect. Don't read.

The rule was passed in 1981. The players ignored it and the league never enforced it. Jerry joined the NFL as a rookie in 1985 and did what virtually every other WR did and used stickum. Once the NFL decided to enforce that rule, everyone stopped...Big deal...

Seems Dike Florio Jr. has a personal vendetta against the Niners any negative news concerning our team that MOFO wants to kill us any chance he gets. I think we all should ban that piece of S#its site.

Yes, they were, and yes, a foreign substance was an advantage. Did Ken Griffey Jr use steroids? Almost certainly not, so he was at a disadvantage to his peers (including opposing pitchers that were juicing).
It was illegal to add a foreign substance to your hands or gloves that would aid in catching the ball.
But everyone did it. So was it illegal? Yes. Was there an advantage over anyone else? No.

Seahawks or Pats implicated in doing something illegal/against the rules to gain unfair advantage and everyone here is all up in arms.
Jerry Rice admits he used to do something illegal/against the rules to gain unfair advantage and it is OK because everyone else does it.
No bias here.

Not even in the same category at all. It's more like trying to dismiss the accomplishments of someone like Cal Ripken Jr, Tony Gwynn or Derek Jeter because they used pine tar on their bat at one point, or admitted they stole signs when they were on 2nd.
Everyone in any pro league takes whatever advantages they can. And in any sport, at different times, there are various rules that are technically in place, but not enforced in any meaningful manner. So most, if not all, players use those advantages whenever they can. If you want to say that makes every pro athlete in every sport a cheater, than so be it. It's reality.
And BTW, there is no way you know if KGjr used steroids or not. He may not have juiced like McGuire or Bonds, but with all his injuries and playing in that era, there is a very strong chance at some point he used steroids to get back on the field. Maybe not. There is no way to know. But it's pretty unlikely many players made it through that period with zero usage.

I just find the hypocrisy hilarious. A sizable chunk of this website slings wild, baseless accusations against our opponents (e.g. "the only reason Seattle is big and strong is because they abuse PEDs!!!!"), but when one of our own flat-out concedes he broke the rules, everybody frantically comes up with excuses as to why we should sweep it under the rug. Look at how people handled the Aldon Smith situation. There were people on here arguing that multiple DUIs didn't matter because he "only drove into a tree, he didn't kill anyone." What would those same posters call for if Richard Sherman were arrested for a DUI? The death penalty?
A foreign substance did not make Rice the GOAT; Stickum is not snake oil, it doesn't magically transform a mediocre player into the most lethal weapon in NFL history. People apply common sense because it's our player and he gets the benefit of the doubt. Similarly, deflated balls do not turn an average team into one that dismantles the Colts 45-7, and yet there are people who think that the New England's victory should go down in the history books with an asterisk. Give me a break.

Florio is a big piece of s**t. He's worse than Skip Bayless. Pretty sure he's not well liked in the media as he's not on NBC's A-Team. Always given a small little spot to spew a short 5 mins of garbage out of his mouth during football night in America coverage.
