He didn't use stickum. He used a mild adhesive spray. Stickum was not a spray, it was a viscous goop that had to be physically applied. That stuff could never spray as an adhesive. Stickum became a general term used to describe a tacky substances, but they aren't always the actual goop.

This story is getting so ridiculously blown out of proportion. Early WR gloves where basically baseball batting gloves. Those SOBs are slick even in baseball without using pine tar/spay adhesive. Hell, I playing in a couple of softball leagues and use 3M spray adhesive on my gloves to tack them up.

Also, cris carter is an obnoxious a*****e, while a HOFer isn't as good as HE thinks he is. He is just latching on to this to make himself look better. In all honesty Carter isn't in the same Galaxy as Jerry.
Now Florio has posted an article about Michael Irvin denying it and shunning Rice.

Florio is trying to get Rice banished or something. Hes going full force at Rice, and trying to get this story to blow up.

Just an attention whore trying to make a huge deal out of a small issue. The Patriots probably paid him off.

And when these other receivers say "hell no, I didn't use stick-um" they are referring to the goop, not the spray. Jerry made the error of using the general term to talk about the spray.

Can't take Irvin word though, I'm pretty sure during the timeframe in question, irv was "coked" out of his mind

Jerry's err was his mouth.

Jerry Rice's (and Joe Montana's) remarks about the underinflated footballs made me cringe. Those remarks were absolutely uncalled for.

Just what we need; ex-49er greats whining about the Patriots. Talk about embarrassing.

So some Patriot fan found an old clip of Rice using his mouth and not his brain.

Rice's remarks then and now deserve no defense.

Oh, dont get me wrong, Jerry is not a smart person. He should not be on TV.

I think he misspoke about "stickum". A tack spray to keep those old gloves grippy is NOT stickum. Stickum is yellow and dirty, and acts like glue. What Rice used was just something to keep his gloves from getting slick. The problem is now people wont know the difference, or care to look into it. He will just get the cheater tag in public opinion.

The gloves now are probably far more grippy than any tack spray made the old ones. Its a non-story that Rice could've avoided if he was smarter.

Jerry Rice made some stupid, petty, indefensible remarks. I have no idea if he is smart and I do not mind him being on TV.

I would assume that Rice knew what he was talking about when he spoke about his gloves. I do not know if what he did counts as cheating, but he did make it sound like he was cheating and that he knew he was cheating. But, he has the right to say what he wants about his career.

Cheating disappoints me.

In my opinion, his remarks about the underinflated balls and the Patriots stand as simply petty whining and are not defensible.

If Jerry Rice suffers because of his remarks, so be it.

To be honest, since the season ended and I've started following the other sports more, I've come to realize what a joke the NFL, and the media that covers it, is. It's a completely different mentality. The other sports don't have this TMZ, National Enquirer style media coverage b******t. Each sport has their own controversies, and stories get sensationalized, but the NFL takes it to a whole other level.

well said.

Hey man when we don't make it you got to pick your poison. Would you have preferred Seattle repeating?

Stickum is like Kleenex, Post-It, Velcro, etc., brand-names that have become a generic term for a product. If anyone wants to see how Stickum was used and what it looked like back when it was banned, they just need to pull up some pics of Fred Belitnikoff and take note of the yellow globs on his socks, or Lester Hayes and yellow splotches all over his jersey. Nothing like what Rice used, but he should've just let sleeping dogs lie.

And just as an aside, Mueller Sports makes Stickum and their aerosol spray works great...I use it for racquetball, and know people who use it for golf, tennis, weightlifting, etc. Also know kids who use it in youth and high-school football where I think it's still legal in many leagues.

Hey I'm a Jerry Rice fan like anyone else here, but let's be honest...he goofed. He sure as hell sounds asinine for calling out the Patriots when he himself has used shortcuts in his career.

Do I think putting stickum helped Rice become a HOF WR ? No. But lesson to be learned is don't call ppl out when your track record is tarred, especially when it's admittedly so

Yep. Then the week could have been good for both guys. 5>2
Jerry's track record is not tarred or blemished.

He can call out anyone he wants. The statements should be judged on their own merit.

Nothing justifies sleazeball hyper sensationalized vindictive journalism.

I think you are the one who sounds asinine trying to pretend you respect Jerry while stating he has used shortcuts and his track record is tarred.

No way, h**l no...I would rather the Patriots win 10 than the Seattle win another one, that's how much I hate the Seahawks. And sure the Niners have won 5, and yeah, I get it they don't "expire", but the last one was 20 yrs ago...if the Seahawks would've won their second straight that's a bit more impressive in the now than harkening back to the days of yore when the Niners were winning...that's on par with Raider fans talking about their 3 with the last one being more than 30 years ago.

Any 49er fan who was pulling for the Seahawks in that SB is NOT a real 49er fan. Pure and simple.
