Without watching Kilgore in depth, I agree very much with what's said about Kilgore. He will not overpower anyone, but always has good positioning so that leverage is working for him. He seems to beat the defender to the spot, and uses leverage to hold the spot, that's sufficient to open holes in the run game. I trust WRATHman's assessment that it's his feet that allows him to do this.

I want to follow up on this train of thought. Thl408 and jonnydel (and anyone else who'd like to comment), do you guys think we're going to switch to a ZBS? I see a few things that hint that we will, including the hiring of Chris Foerster and his history making Albert Morris so good in that system, letting Iupati and Gore go (classic power run guys), building around Hyde (who is very natural running out of shotgun sets and Zone-Read sets) and the athleticism of the young talent that seems primed to step up on the OL.

Do you guys see many hints of ZBS concepts being called on 2014 film? I think Kap and Hyde would greatly benefit from a system like this because of what we can do with read option, play-action, and bootlegs in addition to traditional dropback sets. However, I also worry we might leave behind some of the strengths we've developed in the power run game too.

There are many signs that point to the 49ers going to a predominantly ZBS run game. All those reasons that you mentioned, from draft picks (MMartin, BThomas, Hyde) to the coaching hires. It simply wouldn't make sense to hire Foerster, who I think was one of the first positional coaching hires, then ask him to continue with the power run game.

Just repeating what WRATH mentioned. The read option is an inside zone play. I'd say the 49ers ran more zone plays in 2014 than in any of the previous years under Harbaugh. They were still predominantly a power blocking team, but last year they sprinkled in a lot of zone as well - mainly inside zone. If Boone and ADavis are manning the right side of the Oline, I would still like to incorporate some power blocking concepts into the 2015 run game as I feel Boone's strength is in power blocking.

Here's a zone play they ran a lot of in 2014 - often referred to as "split zone". This play looks just like an inside zone run play except for what the TE (Hback) does here. VD will come across the formation to seal the backside defender as the play flows to the left. Gore can read any of the gaps between the tackles, or read VD's block, and run to daylight.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then here's the basic zone read play (inside zone). Gore can choose any hole he wants.

It will be the outside zone (stretch runs) that challenge the agility and decision making of the 2015 Olineman.
^^^the last play in post 181, really is a beautiful run with kap holding that end. If the OL can get the agility to run that outside stretch, this run attack should be pretty damn good in 2015. I'm eager to see what the 2015 offense is gonna look like.

General thread for cut ups during the offseason. I plan to mainly show clips of the newest 49ers so we can get a sense of what they bring to the table, but topics will vary. I know jonnydel was also talking about posting various cut ups so that would be a welcome addition.

I'm more comfortable breaking down film of a game because there are only so many plays in a game. When doing a player study, I'll show clips that help illustrate my observations of the player. It is indeed cherry picking plays, but those are the plays that I feel best demonstrate the player's strengths and weaknesses.

what does your film study tell about how Jimmy Ward did last year? I am one of the few people that were very happy that we drafted him, and I am really hoping it was not as bad as it seems. Thanks

I actually hated the way they used him. They walked him up on the slot a bunch, but he never seemed to attempt a jam, which puts him immediately in trail with a guy that has the space to go either direction. The coaches didn't help him out much. I really like him, but I can't think of many gys who would have been successful playing that technique.

I will definitely look at Ward's play at some point. The way he lined up in the slot, but didn't press, has to do with the coverage scheme used by Fangio and how pattern matching is easier when the play is in front of the DB and he sees it develop. The way he plays trail has to do with funneling the WR towards his over the top safety help whenever the WR goes vertical. The slot CB position for Fangio was a very cerebral, read and react, type of position.

I'm not a fan either of how we used him but that is how Fangio runs his slot CB's often in his defensive schemes...even with Rogers, Cox and Johnson. I'm looking forward to seeing thl's breakdown more. It should be a nice indicator of how we may use him differently this year or a nice projector, now healthy, of how he'll grow in that role this season.

I really wanted to take a close look at Ward to see how he did as the season went on. I gave him a grace period of two games to get his feet wet and get acclimated to the speed of the regular season. That puts the start of this film study at the @ARI game. He drew Fitz many times as ARI slid Fitz into the slot WR position in their 3 WR sets. I was impressed by the different assignments he was given in terms of what he was asked to do - just Fangio calling his myriad of coverages.

Ward played his assignments well and showed a high awareness as to where his safety help was at all times. Since I plan on looking at all his games (excluding the first two), I'll show them one by one and let the player assessment unfold as more games are watched. I'll select 5ish noteworthy plays per game to get a sense for how he did.

Thanks, Disp, for posting this. The reason he got a poor rating for Pass Rush in this game (@ARI) is because on one play he had a clear path to sack Lindley by blitzing from the slot CB position and totally whiffed. He also blitzed at least 2 other times and got stonewalled by the RB. I'll show these plays afterwards.

Just prepared for some cynics in the peanut gallery who will never think of doing all the work you do for us here to claim you are cherry-picking and deliberately skipping his worst game. I think you should ban them when it happens. You need to get some blood on your hammer.

Ward in tight press alignment vs Fitz. I''m not sure what coverage this is. Looks like cover2 man, but Reid doesn't act like a cover2 safety. If this is indeed cover2 man, then Ward isn't funneling Fitz to where his help is.

Ward jams Fitz at the line. Notice the hand that Ward uses here, his left arm. I think he's trying to funnel Fitz to the outside, but fails as Fitz wins the inside release.

I'm not sure what to make of this play, because I can't determine the coverage, except to say that Ward was asked to press, bump and run.

I understand if I'm accused of cherry picking games and omitting the vsCHI game. My logic is to let the rook get his feet wet, make some adjustments, get that initial flood of information of coaching and self gained experience, then see how he does. Making that jump from the MAC conference to the NFL is like playing on a different planet.

I totally get your reasoning. I just looked at the Geep thread after a couple days off, and I found where all the nay-sayers scurried off to. If they wander here, I hope the hammer is ready. Selfishly, I want to see some smashy-smashy (I would make a horrible mod).
