A lot of this in the game as Ward plays his assignment, understands his help, not targeted by the QB (Austin Davis) who did not have a good game versus the 49er defense.
Ward versus CGivens. I think it's Cover3 with Ward pressing the #2 because there's no other threat to his area.
Take outside leverage knowing he has intermediate and deep help in the middle.

3rd & 2
The 49ers are pattern matching versus Mesh + Curl/Flat concepts.
Both #2s are running a Mesh. The RB #3 and the #1 are running a Curl-Flat concept.
Bethea is pointing with his right hand, giving the 'Under' call, passing coverage of the Drag route off to the a team mate in the middle of the field. Ward should be doing the same thing with the #2 WR he lined up across from.
Ward starts to follow the #2 WR on his Drag route and leaves his responsibility of being the Curl/Flat defender on his side of the field. This opens up the Flat route from the RB.
Two signs that Ward didn't pick up on. As soon as Ward saw the #2 on his side Drag across the field, and the RB flare to the flat, Ward needs to stay at home. Also, Ward has to hear Bethea's 'Under' call and get ready to receive a route coming his way. Ward should never have even thought about matching the Drag. Cully is seen talking to Ward after the play.
The ILBs play this perfectly as Wilhoite knows he has to match that #2 due to the RB flaring out, who Ward should be covering.

Ward in the slot.
Ward takes inside leverage and re-directs the #2 away from the middle of the field to help his safety behind him.
After Ward collides with the #2, he passes off coverage to the safety and takes the RB in the Flat - assignment sound.
Ward gets it correct. Jam the seam route to help the safety. Let the RB take him to the Flat.

Ward wasn't targeted directly this game (that I saw) except for the first play shown where it was like a throw away. Except for that play where he left his zone to follow someone else's assignment, he had another solid outing in my observation.
He did get flagged for this defensive holding call versus TAustin.

I still believe that Boldin half assed his route and it's evident from the TV telecast. Had he run his assignment correct, then VD gets the space needed. Boldin is not clearing for Gore's route, he's clearing for VD's route. VD' and Gore's route work to vertically stretch the playside curl/flat defender.Originally posted by jedediahyork:You said if Boldin ran the route better, the ball wouldn't have been picked. I disagree. It was a poor read by Kap... the ball should have been thrown to the RB coming out of the backfield. He basically threw the ball into quadruple coverage, with a wide open RB at the first down marker. I think Boldin slows his route down once he's cleared the defenders out of the flat for Gore. He doesn't start slowing down until he's almost 20 yards down the field. You wouldn't happen to know the down here?
Anyhow, interesting stuff in here.
Also, Boldin should have worked to get an outside release so that the CB's back turns to the play. When Boldin stems his route inside, it allows the CB to be facing the play, the middle safety to provide help, and the CB to have confidence in breaking off of Boldin to jump VD's route because he knows he has help to the inside on Boldin.
Boldin absolutely half-assed that route! If its clear from TV that he isn't the primary receiver then its more than obvious to a trained professional defensive back. They ignored Anquan and jumped the pass easily.
I think its because defenders dont respect boldins speed, he might not be the fastest but he can cover some ground, if it were torrey smith there, the defender would have followed him.

I guess. The only thing that article had in common with my study is that it is about Jimmie Ward.
LOL...true. It only makes us appreciate you that much more over here on the webzone!
Great work on Ward. The film work is really helping to shape up clear thoughts on Ward in his first year and what to expect in his second year (if 100% healthy).

The Rams' qb bail out too early. He had a better chance if he had stood in there, he could've made the pass to a wide open receiver, even with the rush coming. The difference between the Seahawks attempt and the Rams attempt is the spacing. The Seahawks at the 1 gives the defense advantage when everyone is bunched inside within about 10 yards. Not a lot of space for the defense to worry about. Just a lot of quick reaction by the defensive players. And throwing lanes are smaller.
The Rams have a lot more space at the 20 to make that a better chance to work. The receiver was wide open. He just bailed too early. Throw it quick and his receiver might just score a TD after the catch.

Thanks for all the breakdown on Ward
He didn't have as bad of a season as I originally thought
