Next up is Patton. Let's see if he deserved to get playing time, or if there's something lacking to his game. The guy is good with the ball in his hands, but that's not the hard part of playing WR. The hard part is getting separation to get the ball into the hands.

I also want to thank you for your excellent work in posting these "film" analyses. What you showed with Ward was reassuring - as you said, he only seemed to show up on the broadcasts of the games when he was burned in coverage.

I'm looking forward to seeing your analysis of Patton. I really like the "kid". He obviously really likes playing the game and has a lot of heart and as much "want to" as you could desire from a player for your team (always seems to be there to make deep downfield blocks). I've been wondering if the reason he hasn't gotten more playing time is because he hasn't developed (or just plain doesn't have the physical ability) to get separation, so I'm glad that you will especially be looking at that.

Thanks again.

I think it's a great one to review as well given the roster. He could end up being a cut or fighting for a job:

(2) X WR: Torrey Smith; Jerome Simpson
(2) Y WR (SLOT): Bruce Ellington; DeAndrew White
(2) Z WR: Anquan Boldin; Quinton Patton (DeAndre Smelter)
(6) Notes: Even – Last year we kept 6 WR's in Crabtree, Boldin, Johnson, Lloyd, Patton & Ellington
I love this thread!

We are lucky to have this really. Thank you guys for the work.

For real. Someone needs to reach out to jonnydel and split up this work. Thl408's work really helps shape realistic expectations for players, even scheme/design.

You know Baalke has access to these types of evaluations and when he says we're good at CB (even though he was looking at CB in the draft but the board didn't fall that way) or he didn't feel the ILB crop in the draft was strong, I believe him. Same with comments about watching Johnson's big frame in the slot esp in the RZ.

He has a really good feel for these players (esp the younger ones) and knows our strengths and weaknesses.

The safeties aligned close to the LoS suggest Quarters, which is specific variation of Cover4. When I say "Cover4" I am reffering to a very soft coverage for long down and distance. It's hard to be sure what coverage that is from a presnap snapshot, but because it's near the red zone, I'm positive what they mean is "Quarters". They aren't wrong, they just aren't specific. A defense can play press Quarters which is why the CBs are pressing.

It's like showing a picture of food and saying "that's meat". It's not wrong but if you say "that's poultry", it's more specific.

Quinton Patton played mostly in the final two weeks of the season. His offensive snaps breakdown went as follows (according to http://www.rotowire.com/football/player.htm?id=8797):
@OAK: 12
@SEA: 1
SD: 47
ARI: 26

Week 13
I don't think he ran many routes of the 12 snaps in this game. I could only see him in these two plays. If he ran any other routes, it was not noteworthy due to him not factoring into the play. SJohnson got the majority of the #3WR snaps in this game.

Three level Hi-Low read vs cover 3
QP will run a clearing route to remove the deep 1/3 defender on this side of the field (High). Crabs runs the middle read - Corner route. Boldin runs the Curl (Low). Trying to vertically stretch the curl/flat defender (blue).

The faster/farther QP can push that deep 1/3 defender back, the more Corner route has room to work.

The curl/flat defender gains good depth, hips slightly turned upfield, to take away the Corner route. The only target possibly available is the Curl (Low).

Incomplete to the Corner route. Overthrown from having a very small window due to the curl/flat defender gaining good depth. I can't really tell how well QP does his assignment here on the clearing route. Looks fine to me as the Corner route was actually targeted and the deep 1/3 was in no position to make a play on the throw.
^ That looked like a s**tty play to me.

And wtf was iupati doing lol

That is kinda weird. Usually a smash concepts does a good enough job of creating its own openings. I think running it with an extra fly route just invites another defendwe. Hell they just should have run a sail concept....IMO it's a better concept from a trips/Trey form.

This is the play where he was targeted - quick slant in the slot versus Tarell Brown.
Cover1 Spy (robber).

TBrown presses, but will not jam. After some shake and bake, QP breaks to the inside. 3 step timing, Kap targeting QP.

Ball is batted away by the MLB (robber). Due to the MLB being within sight, QP has to turn this slant into a skinny slant to avoid running into the MLB. A skinny slant is not as effective verus the CB because it isn't breaking away from the CB as a normal 45 degree slant is. This explains why QP wasn't able to get as much separation as he may have.

A look from the endzone camera to see the tight window Kap had and why QP made his slant a skinny slant.
There's the robber (blue). Notice his positioning, related to the hash marks. QP is in the slot to Kap's left (not shown).

As soon as Kap secures the snap, he looks to QP. The robber starts to cheat over.

Notice the robber now as Kap is mid windup.

A bit of a tangent, but wanted to mention that Kap can help QP have more room to work if Kap looks to his right, just for a split second, to hold that MLB. I have an example of Kap doing just that in another play. I'll get back to it after QP.

This is it for this game as out of QP's 12 snaps, these were the only routes noteworthy of mentioning and might actually be the only snaps where a pass play was called.

Boldin's Curl attracted the hook defender more than the curl/flat defender. But Crab's Corner does open up the Curl for a split second. If they wanted the Corner route to get more room, then Have Boldin run a quick Out (pretty much a Sail like you said).
^ Kap just staring down the route. ehk

I commend you though for being able to stomach that raider game. That is probably my least favorite game of the harb/kap era. Kap was way off and harbs acted like he didn't give a s**t. I will never forget how he was yucking it up with M.davis in the pregame AND we lost to the f**king raiders.

Wasn't Kap acting like a B during the game and at the press conference after?
