Inverted Smash vs Cover3 with 5 underneath (3 pass rushers)
QP running the Corner after stemming inside to give more room to the Corner.

QP's route vertically stretches the flat defender who has his hips turned upfield.

Complete to the low read (Boldin in the flat)

Another Stop route. Not much separation gained as the CB does a good job angling QP towards the sideline. Once that is done, he knows QP has no other way to go but back to the QB.

Targeted, incomplete. QP finished the game with 6 targets, 2 completions for 9 yards.

That does it for the SD game.

Thanks for the QP breakdowns. Torrey Smith is going to be awesome running those routes. Sorry to say this but Patton should probably be cut. I love his blocking, effort, and attitude but Osgood or Holliday will probably bring more to the team.

I was not impressed with QP in this game. Perhaps he's not suited to be an X WR. He does not threaten vertically and can't get past the CB anytime the CB is physical. He used his hands a few times to swat away contact, but if contact is ever made, his route was dead. This was against the backup CB most of the time. From the slot, QP seems to be okay. Unfortunately, he's not taking that spot away from Boldin. We'll see how he did against ARI.

Right. He's unspectacular and has a very replaceable skillset.

How about an Ellington breakdown?

There could be a real battle going on here. Right now I have:

(2) X WR: Torrey Smith; Jerome Simpson
(2) Y WR (SLOT): Bruce Ellington; DeAndrew White
(2) Z WR: Anquan Boldin; Quinton Patton (DeAndre Smelter)
(6) Notes: Even – Last year we kept 6 WR's in Crabtree, Boldin, Johnson, Lloyd, Patton & Ellington

But it appears Geep always first talks about Dres Anderson. He may be competing with Patton here.

The thing is I think the third receiver needs to be an outside guy because boldin is a slot receiver. Jerome is probably best fit for the outside, and I think bruce has the deep speed to be able to do that.

Yeah, all semantics TBF. But typically you have your speed at the X, your beef out at the Z and you quick-twitch guys inside the slot. But like you noted, there is no reason we won't put T.Smith at the X, move J.Simpson out to the Z and slide Boldin inside to the Y at times. Most will be cross trained.

I'm rooting for JSimpson to step up for the reason you stated, philo. He is an X WR and will allow Boldin to slide into the slot. Last season, they shoehorned SJ/Lloyd into the X spot in 3 WR sets just so Boldin can move to the slot. Which is fine for Boldin, but SJ and Lloyd couldn't get open 1v1 out wide (same for Patton).

The X must be able to threaten vertically in order to run the Out/Comeback/Curl/Stop routes which compliment the deep vertical routes. The Torrey Smith cut ups at the beginning of this thread show him winning vertically, and how he compliments that with the Stop/Curl routes. As we saw with Patton vs SD, he can't get past physical CBs and threaten vertical, so he can't use Stop routes either. Simpson has some size and speed and I hope he can step up into this role. He doesn't have to dominate and win every snap, just show that he is able to threaten.

The prospects of have a true speed guy that can catch at the X is the ONE thing I'm most excited for in 2015. Offenses just look and respond different when this is the case. All plays and concepts are on the board, because with a capable X you can attack both the concept side and back side (in base and 3x1 sets.).

Looks like SD trying to play prevent defense lol. Not sure what's the situation. They are giving us too much respect to our downfield speed.

I included the down and distance in all these cut ups. It's in the screenshot (yellow text). Kap didn't do anything wrong here. He made a nice, short completion to Boldin on first down.

No, I didn't think Kaep did anything wrong either. More of an observation on the SD defense

Looking at that play in totality, it looks like at the top you have almost like a smash variation and on the bottom it looks like a sticks concept almost. I wonder if the back was suppose to check it up and act like how the TE acts in a sticks concept. Just seems weird to have two flat routes in the same area.
