That does it for Patton as those are the three games he got good playing time in.
Strengths:
- Good straight line speed when not bumped off route.
- Seems to do well with the ball in his hands. This is from the two endarounds (one shown above, another where he got good yardage but fumbled in OT vs SD). And also this one WR screen pass in an exhibition game where he took it to the house.
Weakness:
- Very affected by attempts to re-route
- Doesn't always get low at the top of the route (coming into a cut/break in the route)
When a defender is able to get his hands on QP, the route is too greatly influenced. He needs to use his hands better to keep the CB's hands off him or just get stronger so that re-routes don't affect him as much. Because of this, he does not appear cut out to be an X WR (split end). The variety of routes the X runs is limited compared to the Z (flanker) and slot WRs. Because the X runs a limited number of routes, he has to be a physical/athletic mismatch to help win 1v1, and versus press.
Not enough targets to say anything about his hands. I would have liked to see QP run a wider variety of routes so that he can use one to set up another. He could not win vertically in the SD game and so his Stop and Curl routes were ineffective. With Torrey Smith on board, he won't have to worry about being an X. His future will probably be as a Z (Boldin) or a slot WR. Too small a sample size to say much about his route running in terms of how well he cuts because he rarely ran routes with 90 degree cuts (like
