The LB covered the flat, which is why you run a guy out there. If you have more horizontal stretch between the two hooks, it makes for a cleaner window to each. Thl, had the progression right 11-82-89.

If Patton runs over the hash and gets to the centerline that leaves a pretty big window for torrey on the outer most hook. Again this is assuming the LB still goes after the flat. The way it was run both hooks basically covered themselves because you need more space between them then they got here.
Understood your point, you are right. Just think about the Vance route, forgot that would make the receivers routes much more open

vs Cover1 robber
It seems like 89 and 82 are to split the cover1 safety. Drag route works cleared out area versus zone.

Pick/rub by Torrey

Torrey is to run across the face of the safety, to hold the safety in the middle of the field. After the pick is normally when a route benefiting from the pick is 'open'. Vance about to gain separation with the defender's back turned to the throw.

Window closed. A throw now would be too late with the safety over top. Robber there to look for crossing routes.

Good time in pocket. Incomplete to the drag route that had no chance.

- Not sure of progression so I don't know if Vance was ever looked at, but of the three verticals, he was the open one. Since he was the beneficiary of the pick, Vance should have been the first or second option. Tight throw for a QB's first start of the season. I have to pick a result so - Missed throw/read.

Mesh + Shallow Cross concepts vs Cover 1 blitz
This play beats man (Mesh) and zone (orange).

Free rusher.

Separation for the Mesh concept.

+41 yards.

- Good read/pass. Nice escape. Throwing on the run, leads Patton for RAC.

Double Post + Mesh vs Cover3

Near collision between Patton and Vance. Gabbert looking over the middle. Can't tell if Gabbert looks to the double post.

+8 to bring up 4th & 1. When executing the Mesh concept versus zone coverage, the WRs can be taught to stop and sit down in between the zones, in the quiet area, which is what Patton does here.

- A decent outcome for the play, and one where Patton could have turned it upfield faster to pick up the first down. I think Gabbert could have hit Torrey on the Double Post concept. Grading harshly - Missed read/throw.

This is a designed throw. Just a dressed up WR screen pass. Draughn and Vance never look back for a pass and are looking to find blocks the entire way. There are no reads or progressions for Gabbert to make and the play design is simply to get the ball into Patton's hands with blockers in front.

Pass batted down at the LoS. Incomplete.

- Play design takes ball out of Gabbert's hands.

This route combination has shown up many times going back to Harbaugh's offense. The two curl routes for a zone busting horizontal stretch. The fade route is against man coverage with the entire sideline to work.
vs Cover1 blitz

+21. Nice ball placement to Patton's outside shoulder.

- Good read/throw

The weakside CB is in man coverage, the rest are in cover3. With the safety shaded to the field, Simpson is 1v1 backside with no safety help.

Back shoulder throw.

- Good read/throw. WR has to help out a little and make a play.

Celek runs a stick nod route.
vs Cover4

Draugh's route draws the red LB forward. Celek head faking towards an Out route...

then to the post. Touchdown.

- Good timing and ball placement. Good read/throw.
