left: Curl-Fade-Curl
right: Fade/pivot; works similar to Fade/Out combination where the Fade clears area for the pivot to work
The two routes designed to beat man coverage are Boldin's fade (yellow) and Torrey's pivot route (purple).
vs Cover 1 blitz

With the yellow CB (Matthieu) playing over the top of Boldin, Boldin's fade route is beaten. Free rusher (blue) off the right edge.

Sacked for -10

Martin sliding over to help Boone leaves a 3v2 situation that Tiller/Pears loses.

This is good defense with the CB defeating Boldin with positioning, bad pass protection because there is only time for one read, but also a missed read. With the CB Matthieu playing soft, giving a cushion to Boldin pre-snap, that should tell Gabbert that Boldin's fade is most likely not going to win. On the other side of the field, Torrey was getting pressed, which is what a pivot route (quick double move) is designed to beat. Tough call here. - Bad pass protection.
....
Here's the same route combination (Kap's right) against Cover1, but here, the CB plays with trail position which allows for the pass to go over the top.
why are you breaking down old 49ers plays?

you should be looking at Philly plays from the past few years and then we can compare how close we look to the New Western Philly's of Santa Clara once the season starts.

Because I can't get enough of that GeepSula offense.

I cut up a bunch of Chip plays here:

49ers will run a Mesh concept (orange + purple) and an Inverted Smash concept (yellow + red)
vs Cover 1 robber (with pattern match)

The robber helps to take away the Mesh. Gabbert makes the right read and targets the Corner to Patton. Patton doesn't run a sharp route - takes the orange path instead of yellow.

Not much separation, but a good throw would give Patton a chance.

Pass is underthrown and INT'ed.

Patton doesn't really break towards the Corner, just kind of turns around and tails towards the sideline - not sharp. Didn't matter because it was a bad throw.

Read is fine, pass is bad - Missed read/throw
@post #648 The best out of that play by Gabbert, had he went to Torrey on the other side, and got the ball off before the free rusher got to him, would be a chance on a holding call by the Cards on T.Smith. Smith didn't get free until after the rusher got to Gabbert.

Just bad all around for our guys.

I feel as though there are a good handful of plays last season where had Torrey been targeted, a defensive PI/holding call would have been called. One thing the refs fail at league wide is calling defensive PI/holding calls when the WR being held is not targeted with a pass. It's as if the refs think it doesn't matter if the WR gets held if the pass doesn't come his way.

MM sucks SOOOOOOO bad on this play. Why would you ever slide left against that look? 4 potential rushers to the right, 2 to the left, no back, and MM slides left.

Dumb.

You switch the HB curl to a Wheel and take one of the non mesh WR to a dig or middle hook and you have a chip Kelly philly staple play. Personally I've always loved mesh concepts, absolute staples of the old school WCO and the air raid offenses.

Dumb.

It is mind boggling how unaware Martin is on stunts/loops/blitzes. He has tunnel vision for a center. I don't know how the slide protection gets called, whether Martin is making them, maybe Gabbert, maybe Boone (vet OL), but it was bad all season.

The Center should be the QB of the OL. Kilgore seemed to be pretty good at making reads and adjustments, really sucked when he went down. Before that we had Goodwin and he was good. Neither guy was an amazing blocker but when you make adjustments to get the guys in the right spots and on the same page it makes a huge difference. Martin just looked lost like he isn't paying attention. Could have been poor game prep from coaches also?

Yeah it should be the Center, although there are occasions where the Guard will make the calls if the Center is inexperienced, which is the case for Martin. We talk about how Center is a cerebral position and this is why. Gotta do the film work to understand presnap looks and defensive tendencies. That definitely comes from the coaches too. Being that Tomsula is a DL coach, maybe he did have good input there. I know this is one play, but this actually happened a lot last season where the protection went the wrong direction and it caused immediate pressure up the middle.

Watching Martin (early) and even Pears at G late in the season when Brown came in, it's mind boggling how poor those two were. I mean horrendous...cringe-worthy. And I won't even mention the "D" word.
