The Richie James screen started at the 49ers 25 yard-line. Weston Richburg and Mike Person sprinted with James and didn't fall until the Arizona 30. That's 45 yards. The 49ers O-linemen can RUN.

Pass protection clearly needs some work but this might be the most concerning (granted, teams have been more focused on stopping this).
#49ers rushing attack:

First seven games: 272 carries, 1268 yards (4.6 ypc)
Last three games: 77 carries, 222 yards (2.8 ypc)

Yep.
I feel like all the injuries every week have overshadowed discussion of this, but the lack of run game is easily the biggest issue on this team right now.
The Carolina game really obscures how big of an issue it is too: The Carolina game is the only game in the last month and a half that the 9ers have averaged over 3.5 YPC, which is just terrible. Part of that is teams selling out to stop the run and part of that is teams moving to five man fronts against us which messes up the outside zone, but even in lighter boxes they haven't been doing well.

Very much agreed. And like JD showed, even when all the regulars do a great job, just one guy off blows up the entire play. Everything has to be perfect and perfectly timed as a unit. That's why one guy like Clowney can just blow everything up.

Teams are stacking the box and it shows in our output.
OLine was/is my biggest concern entering the season and it still is.
The pass protection was average to less than average, the running game 2was pathetic.
McG is better than average but not by much.
Skuhle and Brunskill are keepers for sure.
We need to look for eventual replacements for C, G's and maybe a T.

richburgh and tomlinson have been whipped badly the last 2 weeks in the run game. both guys are constantly pushed backwards I noticed last night the rams got away form the zone runs and went more power.

It's hard to believe this was virtually the same line putting up 200 yards rushing on the ground. Kyle said last night this was the first time he consciously committed to the passing game solely in the second half. That's scary.

Jimmy g had good protection yesterday and the cardinals
Sold out to stop the run which made it easier to throw the ball. I don't know why people are criticizing the offensive line when I thought they played great yesterday

Defenses are scheming differently now than they were in the first 6 games. They are committing more defenders to stop the run, and it is working. It will continue to be that way until the 49ers can prove they can win consistently by passing. That is not just up to Jimmy. The receivers have to get healthy and play at a consistently high level.
With a healthy Kittle, Sanders and Juice, along with Deebo, defenses will have to respect the pass more, which will open the run game again. If you look at who the 49ers were running out there yesterday after Sanders went out, you can see why it was hard to run. Nobody would respect that crew...yet Jimmy and Kyle got it done.
In order to win these upcoming games, health is the number one component. It isn't realistic to blame the OL for the lack of a running game.

Yes this is absolutely scary. We don't have the horses to be a passing team EVEN WITH Kittle healthy. PP is not this OL's strength at all. If Kyle wants to have that type of game, he needs to bring in better guys for PP.
We held chandler jones in check yesterday. Jimmy g wasn't getting hit a whole lot either. The offensive line played well yesterday. Give them credit where it is due.

They countered it with screens that worked. You know screens are also runs too right?Originally posted by NinerGM:Originally posted by dj43:Defenses are scheming differently now than they were in the first 6 games. It's both tactics and execution. I hear you dj but I disagree based on the film. The Seattle game shows that teams are always stacking the box to defeat the run, they're just playing us differently and scout this team differently. We shouldn't simply be focused on passing more, but trying to figure out better ways to run the ball. It is a failing proposition to ask a QB still growing/learning how to pass in this offense to throw 30/40 times a game to win. Also there's a direct correlation between our defensive effectiveness and our ability to run. Is all the blame on the OL? No, but some? Yes. Execution is just as important as tactics. Both have to be addressed.

Not sure what game you saw but Jimmy was getting crushed consistently and the run game was basically non existent. OLine was awful across the board.
