New Jets coach Robert Saleh is taking two Niners offensive assistants: passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur (as OC) and OL coach John Benton (as OL coach/run game coordinator)...
Benton gone...Chris Foerster most likely the new OL coach.
Why would anyone take our O line coach. Lol
Have to be honest, this was my reaction too! Probably most unfair
Saleh and Benton coached together in Houston. Additionally, Bentons contract may have expired. And with Saleh giving him run game coordinator duties, it's a semi promo.
Dang, I was joking when I said Saleh should take Benton as his OC, now he's Saleh's run game coordinator. I was *joking* Saleh.
Benton is a good hire, and a good up and coming coach. Big loss to the 49ers in my opinion.

I think we'll be elite in run blocking, and probably 29th in pass protection. So PFF will average that out and say we're a good offensive line, even though our QBs got injured.
As always, its the 49er way
Totally agree. Benton was one of my favorite OLine coaches.

This. Our only hope is a clear upgrade in talent. I know I'm setting myself up for disappointment, but hoping for Slater at 12. And a C/G in round 3. Total break of previous trends, but this situation with Trent Williams is showing the need for quality talent, guys that do not have to be coached up as much, on cheap rookie deals.
You never know. We saw several more athletic QB's get hurt again and this time in the playoffs. Then Rodgers, Brady and Brees behind stellar lines. Allen and Mayfield.
We could see two huge shifts in philosophy for a Shanahan both at type of QB and emphasis on pass protection.
Worried about the pass blocking more with Foerster, but maybe I shouldn't be? He's had good running units in the past, can't recall the passing efficiency. Looking at the rankings, this is what I found for his OL units in terms of sacks allowed:
AVG OL SACK RANK IN HIS 19 seasons as an OL coach: 17th
So, overall, he is in the middle of the pack. He's had 5 seasons ranking in the top 10 in sacks allowed, 4 other seasons at least ranked in the top half. 5 seasons ranked in the bottom 10, and 5 other seasons in the bottom half but better than bottom 10. Again, pretty much hit or miss, and I imagine talent has something to do with it too of course. Seems like when the talent is there, he can get the unit to do decent. We need to upgrade regardless.

I'm really not trying to give up before I see it on the field but Chilo Rachal and Adam Snyder are just reminders/examples of the Forester regime and things didn't get better until he left. Seems like only KS is looking for Foerster particularly in a league where OL play is down and everyone is looking for talent development.
PP just won't be a priority and even when it will be, Foerster isn't known for developing PP skills.
In Foerster's defense (and I am not a fan), Chilo Rachal and Adam Snyder were not good anywhere else. I am confident that if there's another year where Kyle's offense is held back by O-line performance, he will upgrade the coaching position.

Chris Foerster is a wide zone guy. He learned the system under Mike Shanahan.
Outside of him getting caught blowing some lines, he's been one of the better OL coaches over the past decade. I saw Pitt fans wanting to grab him this yr

I wish I had your faith OTC. We run lean when it comes to OL talent with a myopic focus on run blocking. I just don't see us bringing in talented pass protectors draft or FA. Foerster also came back to coach with Tomsula (2015). Again, for someone who's been coaching 30+ years at NFL just very meh as you've pointed out. Even with upgrades we need a Koucerk of the OL. Unless Foerster has done a 180, he's not that.
2021 already trying to troll 2020.
Foerster is being brought back mainly because of his run blocking expertise I think. We'll have to hope we upgrade out pass blocking when it comes to talent at C/RG. McGlinchey has to get better too or we're screwed.

Maybe he adapted to the schemes at that time?
No idea. Tomsula* even brought him to run a zone scheme. I'll never forget the crazy number of zone runs they ran against Minnesota in the opener with Kap in 2015.
He's def a zone guy. Every run play in this game must have been outside zone.
