I heard a discussion about Jimmy's injuries and they mentioned that it wasn't just that he gets hurt a lot but when he gets hurt. His injuries have come in game 2, games 2 and game 3. The point being. it's not like he's taking a beating for 10-12 games and then getting hurt. it's happening really early without a lot of contact. The knee was without any contact. He just slipped on the sideline. There was contact on the ankle but no more than happens every week. It wasn't a brutal hit. I didn't see the shoulder injury in NE so I don't know about that one.

Sorry I missed this but this post is really important. You're right about the injury timing. The injury in NE was like the 2nd game of the season. He hadn't been playing long - looked great in his starts and boom, driven in the turf.

Just a theory but I'm thinking it takes him some time to get acclimated to the hits that he supposedly likes to take. Also I know protection at the beginning of the season isn't as solid as during the end. There are other contributing factors like conditioning. I'm not sure there are enough correlations between player, protection, timing during the season but definitively at topic worth investigating.

Dave Wannstedt was the guy that was being interviewed. He said that taking hits is a skill and some guys just don't know how. He mentioned guys like Brady and Manning who weren't mobile but knew how to turn or fall so they mostly avoided serious injuries. I have no idea if that's a skill that can be learned or if it's something that's instinctive. Whatever, it's clear that Jimmy has been getting injured way too often and too easily.

Agree. Our hall of fame GM also was pretty injury free during his career. If anybody can pick players who won't be infected by the injury bug, it should be him.

Not initially. He could have been designated as injury prone early in his NFL tenure. I think that's why we are willing to give injured players a chance. Lynch has experience there.

Having played for so many years in the NFL, Lynch knows that injuries often are just bad luck. One misstep or getting your leg trapped in a pileup can end your season. It doesn't make you injury prone. Getting injured often without much contact is a little different. In either case it doesn't mean you will keep getting hurt. The injuries that would worry me are back issues since they can linger for years and of course knee or achilles injuries since they can affect speed and agility. I would fully investigate any knee surgery to see exactly how serious it was, how the surgery went and what the prognosis was. I'm sure they do that. It also depends a little on the position. Defensive edge rushers and DBs along with WRs and RBs rely much more on speed than O, QBs and interior D linemen.

It all comes down to doing your homework and then just get a little luck.

I like NC's method. If injured (considering the 49ers long history of above average injuries) Just downgrade any injured player a round or two lower and *then* medically evaluate them.

What " legitimate" conclusion can we make of that?

I love when people propose we move on from Jimmy or trade Nick Bosa because they're injury prone while advocating a trade for Deshaun Watson.

Watson still looks great, even after the injury, Jimmy regressed a lot since his. But im sure if he has a great OL, playmakers, RBs, great defense, great coaching, great barber, great chef, great everything, he will look okay again.
If Slater is there at #12 I'd be very happy if we took him.

Potential Franchise T of the future.

Which is odd when praising a draft that takes Landon Dickerson in the mid 2nd round. Dude has had 2 torn ACL's and missed another two years with season ending injuries.

Well he likes Slater too, and I think he's had injuries too.
It'll be an interesting case study. Wentz will finally have some quality protection. Is it too late? Broken man?

....and ignoring everyone else on the most injured team over the past 7 straight years. LOL

Whoa

Turf should be banned or at least completely redesigned. It kills seasons.
