First, he values the *position greatly. Second, he recognized the annual pattern of injuries. Third, he started adding volume to it (FA veterans, higher capital like Joe Williams of draft picks, and late and UDFA's) and stashing 2-3 more on the PS to help offset that (3 prong approach). Fourth, he activated 5 RB's for the first time in his career stating it is now a "necessity" (e.g. he was adapting to reality). Fifth, he started letting injury proned players walk despite their talent (Breida and Mostert) in an effort to rectify the obvious issue. Sixth, he started using higher end draft capital like Sermon which for the RB position is the equivalent to a first or second round pick for other units. Seventh, the second he didn't see immediate returns, he doubled down on it . And finally, he even started using his QB and WR1 in the running game.

*The trick here is he and Turner have a keen eye for the talent at RB. If you don't have that first, nothing else matters.

Everything about these 'actions' tells you how important RB is to his system, that he quickly saw the injury issue and then did everything he could to rectify it including using outside-the-box tactics. He stacked the position and if it wasn't immediately providing returns, he added more talent to it and he won't stop until it meets that standard.

This is his mindset on OL. See the difference?

"So we're in this situation, we knew Mack had a chance to leave, but you don't want to take that risk. Just stockpiling other players when you can do that at other positions." ~ Kyle Shanahan

He's saying that because at other positions you can stockpile because they can actually play snaps and bring value. Banks played what 5 snaps last year.

You have a point but how many plays did third round RB Trey Sermon Play last year. Now they used another third round pick on a RB this last draft Tyrion Davis-Price. I Like the RB I like the D line, I just think they need use more of the second and third round pick on DB and OL so they have more talented player at those positions. NO not ever second and third round pick but they need to do better then what they have been doing. Colton McKivitz was a 5th round pick and this is his 3rd year, We're asking and thinking is he good enough to play the year at tackle if one of the starter is out??????????? Right now today I have more confidence Banks as a starter then I do McKivitz.

I think Moore is going to end up being the back up tackle. I do agree that they should spend the next couple of drafts looking for O lineman in the 2nd and 3rd round. Perhaps even in the 1st round of the 2024 draft.

2nd/3rd team:
Moore/McKivitz - Moore/Zakelj - Brendel/Po - Moore/Zakelj - McKivitz/Moore

edit- apparently Po played some LG, but struggled.

Watching Brendel and Brunskill go back and forth for who wins the rights to become starting centre for week 1 should be highly entertaining.

Brunskill is 60, 66 I think is Keaton Sutherland and if there is one thing this clip shows, we should have signed Tretter a few days ago.

Brunskill is very unnatural snapping. He got a bit better but just watching him next to a dude like Sutherland, you can really see the difference in how much smoother and natural Keaton is.

Hoov are you going to the Bears game opening day? If any WZ folks are coming to Chicago, let me know. There are HUGE Niner tailgate parties going on!

Was thinking about it, but going to just stick with our yearly opening day party,

My Inferred Offensive Line Depth Chart after day 1:

1st Team:
Williams - Banks - Brendel - Burford - McGlinchey

2nd/3rd Team:
McKivitz/Moore/Brunskill - Moore/Zakelj - Brunskill - Moore/Brunskill - Moore/McKivitz/Brunskill

Outside looking in:
Skule, Sutherland, Shleuter, Po, West

Off the bench, McKivitz would come in at LT; Moore at LG, RG, and RT; and Brunskill at C.

After day 2:
no change, but it's noticeable that Burford remains starting at RG (as opposed to cycling through different players). It's unknown whether Moore would be starting at RG if McGlinchey were practicing.

edit-
Center also appears to be up in the air between Brendel and Brunskill, and you'd probably lean Brunskill based on experience.

After day 3:
major shakeup at multiple positions. New implied depth chart:

1st team:
Williams - Banks - Brunskill - Burford - McGlinchey

2nd/3rd team:
Moore/McKivitz - Moore/Zakelj - Brendel - Moore/Zakelj - McKivitz/Moore

After day 4:
1st team:
Williams - Banks - Brunskill - Burford - McGlinchey

2nd/3rd team:
Moore/McKivitz - Moore/Zakelj - Brendel/Poe - Moore/Zakelj - McKivitz/Moore

edit- apparently Poe played some LG, but struggled.

Those look like the front runners for sure.

I want Tretter, otherwise, Trey is going to be on his ass from up the middle with the centers we have now.

Haha. You know Kyle doesn't listen to me. I'll call Baalke. Maybe I can have him talk to Lynch privately...and then leak it.

My pet theory is not many offenses base their offense on the run anymore, hence less value to the fullback position, and by extension - the linebacker position. It's basically all nickel defenses in the NFL nowadays.

1. They have an excellent eye for talent there.
2. They had Holland/Ryans to develop and coach them up over years.
3. You only need 2 starters.
4. Strategy can easily be modified to work around an injury.

As a result, they are 5 deep and probably the best LB unit in the NFL.

Honestly, if Kyle's strategy on the OL worked (3rd rounder + UDFA's and no misses on draft picks) like LB, this thread would be totally dead. They failed miserably on Kwon Alexander and Reuben Foster though. That thread was hot for a long time as a result like in here now. Once they finally fixed it, it went silent.

Can't wait for that day in here!

Good point about Demeco, never really thought about it before from that angle. I'm going to be on pins and needles when we lose Demeco next year. But I will look forward to the extra 3rd rounders we get as compensation for losing him, for sure. Linebacker corps will probably stay very strong if Vic Fangio replaces Demeco though.
