Banks, Brendel and McG were exposed consistently.
Mason averaged 6.4 YPC against the 10th ranked run defense yesterday. Deebo, Mitchell, Wilson and Mason are all averaging over 5 YPC for the season. The outlier is really CMC at 4.1 YPC and he is averaging more carries per game than anyone else on the team since we acquired him.
For the season... against lesser opponents, not against - as you say the 10th ranked run D. Only Mason was somewhat successful and averages do not show full context of keeping drives alive or more importantly, what killed drives?
Unblocked defenders either stopping the runner. players being beat at the snap, McG being pushed back into the backfield, OR coming free at the passer. Why must there always be spin to defend? How much more evidence is needed? A third injured QB? We're really going to pretend the OL is doing a great job against a winning opponent? We saw the same against KC.
No, keep believing in the 6.4 YPC. My bad. The running game was incredible yesterday. So much so that Jimmy just needed to hand off on 3rd down.
Did you not watch the game? Mason had several solid runs against the 10th ranked run defense yesterday and yes averaged 6.4 YPC. The only issue is he only got 8 carries. Where as CMC had 17 carries and only averaged 3.9 YPC.
Against NO- Mitchell 5.0 YPC
Mason 5.0 YPC
CMC 2.9 YPC
Against ARI- Mitchell 6.6 YPC
CMC 5.6 YPC
Against LAC- Mitchell 4.9 YPC
CMC 2.7 YPC
Should I keep going?
Against the same defenses he has averaged less than the other RB's. So it doesn't matter how good the defense was or wasn't against the run. He still showed to be not as affective running the ball. I would even add in that Mason averaged 5.0 YPC against a defense at the end of the game that knew we were running it in order to close out the game and still found a lot of success.
Ehhh, the way I see it... Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason are probably better pure inside runners than CMC.
But in a perfect world where you don't worry about wearing your RB down with 25+ touches/game, I wouldn't take out CMC for Jordan Mason in MOST situations.
With CMC on the field, he's perhaps not as good in between the tackles as Mitchell and Mason. But he's still solid, and his very presence just opens up the offense in all the ways we know that he can. Plus, outside the tackles, he has the most home run ability between the three.
But if we're talking about a pure running situation, say, a 4 minute offense where it's 100% certain we're going to run the ball... Yeah, Jordan Mason is making a case that he needs to be the guy in there over CMC.
My argument actually stemmed from someone saying the O line are poor run blockers. My case was that there is only 1 RB with a significant amount of attempts that has struggled running the ball behind this O line. He is 1 yard per carry short from the next lowest YPC RB and all the others are well above 5.0 YPC.
What I was not stating was that we should take CMC out of the game in favor of Mason. Obviously CMC is more than just a RB for us. He is a checkdown ace as well as a great slot receiver. He most certainly opens up the field for our other weapons also. I would however cut down on his attempts between the tackles. 1) it will keep him fresh, especially late in the game and 2) he is the least afffective on those types of runs.

Honeself next year, if we have Mitchell and Mason, I wouldn't give McCaffrey more than 10 runs a game. Mitchell is better between the tackles and I'm curious to see more of Mason. Run McCaffrey on a tired defense in the 4th quarter.

Yeah, hard to tease out if that's on Brendel or just a scheme thing (not enough pass protectors in).
And TBF, you're kind of screwed if they have numbers AND cover your hot read.

I wonder how much of it had to do with film study of our protection adjustments based on defensive looks? If defenses continue to follow the dolphins script, it will be interesting to see how Kyle adjusts.
"And so, defensively, what you're going to see [against] Brock is, 'We're not going to give you those. We're going to force you to make the big-boy throws,'" Young explained. "And that's where Brock has tremendous opportunity because they're going to [give him] that opportunity. They're going to crowd the line of scrimmage, shut the running game down, shut down the cheap bubble screens, the [WR] Deebo [Samuel] stuff, the running. Just put people at the line of scrimmage and say to Brock Purdy, 'All right now, big-timer, let's see you do something down the field.' And I think that's the opportunity."
"But I can't imagine defenses, in the next few weeks, will allow Brock to be in that 25 of 37, like they were against Miami, because they've prepared for him," Young said. "I suspect you'll see them try to smoother, take the air out of the system, and then Brock's going to have to expand it himself. He's going to have to make those big throws under pressure and then force them back."

It's tough either way because defenses bluff all the time.
