Pittsburgh's blitz rate was over 38% against us. That is higher than the rate of blitzes we saw from MIA & TB last season when Brock first took over. That is the most blitzes our o line has seen under Brock Purdy.

I guess Tomlin respects our OLine alot more than some here. Still got steamrolled,...but if the protection was so outright bad, there wouldn't be very much of a need to try to blitz.

This back and forth remind of those Lebron/Jordan GOAT arguments. Lebron and Jordan will never be the same age to go head-to-head. Likewise,...we'll never subtract 5 guys from the lineup, and see how we do with 6 players on offense. There's never going to be an end in sight.

As for what someone's previously said about what's required to win it all....well...he's been proven wrong time and time again. So guys....it really is time to move forward.

Everyone here thinks the OL is important and the QB is important.

We can all be honest and recognize that the right side does need to improve as well. But panicking after 1 week where the opponent blitzed us like crazy is extreme.

This is 3 games now where Brock has been blitzed on 28% or more dropbacks. He has passed this test over and over again. If defenses don't back off, they will pay. Brock has a 63.3% completion rate with 5 TD's, 1 INT, 41.1% 1stD rate and a passer rating of 96.7 against the blitz.
Holy s**t I'm looking some PFF grades for the OL and it's a f**king disaster in PBLK grades.

the ride side might as well not have offensive lineman. Burford is the last ranked OG overall and his PBLK grade is an 11! Colton is the 3rd worst OT and had a 40. Brendel has a 45 and was ranked 23rd. Banks with a 48 in PBLK.

all that said we smoked Pitt and Brock played well…QB and play calling clearly matter, but that putrid play at OL can't continue. It's obviously super early and there was a lot of bad OL play across the NFL. You Can't have 90% of your OL suck that bad though.

Yes, on all of this.

Colton is lucky that strip sack didn't swing momentum and/or hurt Brock who had to secure that ball with his surgerically repaired arm/elbow.

No need to panic but this is about what I expected with the talent level of Burford and McKivitz. It's not like they both didn't know they were the guaranteed starters and had all off season to prepare and study for this opening game.

We won so most don't care ATM but that right side continues to be a legit concern and McKivitz was supposed to be a better PP than McGlinchey per Foerster, himself.

Stay tuned...

we also didnt really allow any pressures for the first 1.5Q and I think 1 of the sacks was on brock for not stepping up in the pocket

not saying he played well but I'm not really worried yet

I thought we finally had NC thinking on a neutral level and NY comes in here and blows it all up. 🤣

Haha. No panic here.

I'll wait until mid season again but we do have evidence of the good/bad play from both Burford and McKivitz so I'm not expecting a very high ceiling of talent here. But I'm also not expecting a regular low floor either.

They held up for the first 4 drives. After that, they faced a lot of stunts and blitzes (38% rate) and that is when things went south. They certainly looked unprepared for those things but I think they will be coached up on how to handle it and will be better for it. The next real test will be DAL in week 5.

For sure. Rams are pretty good on that too.

These are good tests for these young players.

I mean I think Burford is more than talented enough to play RG in the NFL. I put more emphasis on those OTs spots and C, and imo Colton us just a guy. He hurts that whole right side.

Haha NC will always have OL on the brain and that's fine. Gotta call that out after seeing that s**t show, the grades back it up.

it's also just WK1 and overall I'd say the OL takes the longest to adjust back. There's simply not enough practice with pads anymore.

Outside of Donald I bet most can't even name a defensive player on that roster, especially on the DL. IMO this should be a get right game along the OL.

We also have to see things with some context. Like the fact that they faced TJ Watt, Cam Heyward and a ridiculous amount of blitzes. Brock Purdy was pressured on 44% of his dropbacks but 38% of those pressures came on blitzes. For a defense to realize that half way through the 2nd quarter that they weren't going to be able to get home traditionally shouldn't exactly be seen as a negative. As far as grades go. I did post some on here from pre season but I typically take them with a grain of salt.

thats actually very encouraging considering their DL

if almost all pressures were allowed on blitzes its more of a communication not skill issue

He has a higher ceiling than Brunskill but his issue is consistency and between the ears. He's got a lot of physical talent.

That is my thought as well. Its something that can be coached up.
