I thought this was a pretty good in depth analayis of the 49er vs Steeler offensive line. Bottom line, the left side of the 49ers is (in his words) elite, but the right side - specifically Colton, it's his hand fighting ability that needs to improve and evolve.

Expecting a QB being paid like an elite guy to not be an awful playoff performer and one of the worst 4th quarter performers ever is not looking at Jimmy through a realistic lens.

Instead I need to look at the 9ers organizational failure of not having tier one groups AT EVERY POSITION to make up for him. Clearly that's the realistic lens that is required.

LOL. They failed at that too.

Thank God for Brock.

So left side is tier 1 and the right side, tier 7? LOL

Well for now

My hope is it will evolve to a tier 1, as the season wears on. Next test is Rams, and I hope to see *some* kind of improvement. I'll take Any improvement to give me hope the OLine is going in the right direction.

Haha.

Most definitely. No more strip sacks, Brock having to arm-fight to keep the ball, arm hit as he's throwing it, etc. Let's see better communication, pass off, angles, consistency, etc. Just show some improvement.

Burford has the physical talent but remains inconsistent and struggles with the mental game. McKivitz to me, just isn't very talented so I'm not expecting a whole lot more growth but if he can raise his floor, that helps.

At some point it would be nice not to have Kyle become hyper focused on scheming around his OL, passing quicker and being forced to keep Kittle and others in to help in PP; where he could just open up the full offense with a peace of mind.

I know there are a few in here who still don't want that. MoR DEfeNSE!!! Haha

I'd love another Trent Williams on the right side, but the Trey trade of 3 first round picks kind of nixed that opportunity. They do have that first round pick next year to get more competition at the right and left tackle spots *next year.* But that doesn't help us *this year.*

From Foerster's interview, he seems confident that McKivitz can improve, and seemed like McKivitz had some technique problems versus lack of talent problems. Foerster seems to think those technique problems can be cured. Just looking at the philm, he has good length, good strength, and quickness. He's not being overpowered. He's not the strongest player on the 49ers, but he's not the weakest either. He matched up well with Aaron Donlad a couple of years ago, when he was still a (I think) rookie or 2nd year player. We'll see come the Rams game if he's improved. The thing with OLinemen is that their - so called talent - is also dependent on the other OLinemen playing next to him. So Burford has to step his game up too, to help Colton out.

I actually believe it had the opposite affect. McKivitz play hurt Burford last week because McKivitz doing such a poor job passing off stunts and such.

I could buy that as well. That cohesion is real. It might take some time for sure.

Yeah, poor play by either the right guard or right tackle (or both) really hurts the entire line, as well as each other. That's why I think between Durability and Talent (i.e. Trent Williams kind talent - power, agility, quickness, and strength) I'll reduce the power/strength, by 15% and push it to durability. When two OLinemen know each other so well (because they have so many in-game reps with each other) that they think as one (like on the left side with Trent, Banks, and Brendel -- you have something special, possibly bordering on elite. The right side of that line, hopefully can develop into that. Foerster is banking on that happening with McKivitz and Burford. I hope he's right.

The Rams Defense is not as good as the Steelers so Ya there is going to be improvement. I would be shocked if there isn't any Improvement from McKivitz. Burford may have a tuff day play against Aaron Donald ?? I don't think the line is bad or great. It should be around the same as last year. When Trent is out they will struggle, and if Mckivitz get hurt at the same time that will be bad . I think they need to start using some of there second and third round pick on Tackle, Center and CB. they need depth at those position so if CB Ward is out they have a up and coming back up to play. An example if Tashaun Gipson is hurt and out are the 49er in trouble? Maybe however I feel ok because they have 3rd pick rookie Ji'Ayir Brown backing him up.
