The O-line is a problem. Everything to the right of #71 is a problem. We are winning DESPITE the OL. We are winning because of Trent and Kyle's scheming.
Check the rankings:
Banks is having an off-year. He ranks #53 of 73 Guards.
Burford is still the same guy he was last year - #65 of 73.
Brendel is #28 of 33.
McKivitz is Mike McGlinchey with reverse numbers in run and pass blocking.
---------------
YAC's post about the direction of running plays makes it obvious. We are a left-handed running team because we can't do anything else until improvements are made.
Here are a couple historic accounts from BT and PFF.
These peer-ranks look oddly familiar, don't they? As to the OL, ShanaLynch seem to have a very consistent type:
Why'd the 49ers release Mike Person? The $2.5m salary-cap break is nice, but it begins and ends with a need for better pass protection.

Person ranked No. 51 of 61 qualifying guards in PFF's pass-blocking efficiency. I wrote about this last month here: https://t.co/behnIHcqlc pic.twitter.com/wEXhz8gWbM
Brandon is one of the best OL evaluators out there, and he's releasing his tiers. Tier 1=elite. Tier 2=very good. Tier 3=good/above average. Tier 4-solid/average 49ers
LT Trent Williams is in Tier 1
Richburg/McGlinchey in Tier 3
Tomlinson/Brunskill in Tier 4
Thanks for the look-back.
I can't believe Kyle likes the lack of balance. Last year it was clear they were trying to break Burford in and get him to a higher level but couldn't afford him in all the time. Brunskill was coming off an injury and was never fully healthy, hence the time split. As we know, Brunskill left for starter money in Tennessee and is having a very good year, as the #12 ranked guard. Now we are left with the hope Burford improves and Banks gets back to last season's form.
No problem. Yeah, let's hope that's a temporary issue at RG and Burford has a much higher talent ceiling and that starts to materialize towards the end of the season and Brunskill falls off (like he usually does). We're going to need it!

I never felt Brunskill got a chance to be a starter here. As a former TE, like Joe Staley, he was quite athletic with good footwork. As such, he demonstrated the ability to play all across the line, a much-needed attribute. During his time here, no one else filled that need. (I believe he could have replaced McGlinchey but for Mc's draft status.) However, he never got the chance because of his perceived value as a jack-of-all-trades. I believe had he been fully healthy last season, as Burford continued to struggle, he would have won and kept the RG slot. Unfortunately, that never happened and the Titans came calling. I follow him on X and he seems to be quite popular. Some former teammates stay in touch there as well.
I won't say the FO here screwed up, but I do believe they felt he would stay at a journeyman wage, which proved not to be the case. Now he is getting, and earning starter pay. Good for him.
Totally agree!!
I really wanted him at RT - IMO he'd still be here if they let him grow a bit more in the position.

It's a slow afternoon so I did some comparison checking between Mc and Brunskill.
McGlinchey is listed as 6'8", 315, 34 arms, and 10 hands.
Brunskill - 6'5", 300, 34, 10
It seemed DB's lower center of gravity and good footwork, combined with similar length, would have made him well-suited to take over the RT slot. *sigh*
----------------
Also, current McGlinchey v McKivitz in PFF PP v RBLK
Glinch - 58/70.5
McKivitz - 62.7/53.6
McKivitz is a slightly better pass protector but not even close to McGlinchey in run blocking. No wonder the run game seems left-handed most of the time.

I do enjoy the wait till mid-season so these random "subject matter experts" can tell me how to think.
