the other DCs were in house and everything just continued seamlessly. This season is uneven imo, but to sit and b***h about the D and whine about "gazillion resources"is just more sour grapes because Lynch didn't follow some WZ experts plan

I think the D has been better than the first half of the year too, where I had legitimate worries. My only hesitation is we haven't played many very good offenses. We may not all the way through the SB though.

We still have issues tackling. Not sure what that's all about.

From time to time, yes. There have been some games where we have missed quite a few tackles. But overall we are 2nd best in the league in tackling.

Our biggest issue on defense has actually been YAC. We give up the 12th highest YAC in the NFL. Which is weird because we give up the 5th lowest YPA.

We're 18th in opponents yards per attempt. But last in the league in opponent attempts overall…

The Wide 9 didn't stop us from being a top tier run D last year. The only real weakness was our ability to stop short yardage runs. My guess- Bosa was in peak form last year and Ebukam +Omenihu were superior against the run compared to Young + Gregory + Ferrell as well as the missed tackles are higher.

We had 64 missed tackles last season. We currently have 61 with 1 game to go.

I just did the caculations we allow the 12th most in YAC by yards but if you take into account YAC/completed pass we are the 6th lowest

Cool. So what is the actual reason for all the negativity toward the defense this season? From what I have read is that it is very difficult to remain a top 5 defense in consecutive seasons and yet here we are.

Between the above post and mine detailing interception and sack numbers, I'd argue yes. Since Chase Young has joined this D, the sack numbers over a full season would be 68. For comparison's sake, Philly had 70 last year. And our interception numbers eclipse theirs. It seems every metric is stating we are far better than we think we are, but the playoffs will tell the final story if we truly have enough. Numbers say we should, on both sides of the ball.

Good stuff. I hope you're right! We're about to find out. They definitely team tackle and fly around better when coming off a break too. Perhaps the pass rush will be more ferocious too (when they get the chance). Close. The. Deal.

Missed tackles and taking poor angles.

They have the 2nd lowest missed tackles in the league.

According to whatever stat house you happened to look up, you'll note the numbers change, depends on who's keeping track. What a missed tackle even is, isn't cut and dry.
Looking at the offseason, Someone like Jordan Morgan in the 1st would be ideal. Can play both OT spots and could play G. Then maybe some like Matt Goncalves in the 3rd/4th
FA, Cushenberry would be ideal, but he will probably command a ton of $. Maybe get a bargain signing with Connor Williams due to the recent knee injury. Can play C and G and is familiar with the system.

That was from pro football reference. PFF has us ranked the 5th best graded tackling defense. Pretty close to me from two separate sites. Give us a source that is contradictory to those two.

Excellent post!
Based on the pro bowl fan votes, we have the top tier OL.

Silverback #1 OT
Banks #1 G
Brendal #1 C
