That's another fluid player to watch. It sounds like he's fighting for a job on the interior where we have lots of numbers BUT if Boone does moves out to T, that might open up a bit of breathing room for him to impress. Trenton Brown merely has the inside track at T for making the 53 b/c we have low numbers at T and he seems to be seizing that opportunity (albeit, in the very early going). But IIRC, didn't Silberman also play T as well? Anyone?

The competition at the interior spots is why Silberman has more of an uphill battle. If they keep Boone at OG then there might be an opening for a swing OT. If they move Boone to OT there will still be competion at OG. The NFL draft scout mentions some problem areas that would concern me moving him to OT.

"His feet seem to move at half speed. Doesn't sustain blocks. Has problems changing direction and struggles badly when trying to hit moving targets on the second level. "

Brown is getting nice reviews from the mini-camps. When they start hitting it will all shake out though.

I can't think of anything special about Silberman. Size, length, and feet are all passable for college, but nothing special. Reminds me of Mike Person. Good technique and effort, though...

Yeah I know many people here don't like Pears based off his PFF numbers, but one thing you have to give a lot of credit to Baalke and our scouting department is bringing in veteran FA's that fit our team. If you look at signings like Whitner, Carlos Rogers, Bethea, Goodman, Dorsey, Skuta, etc. These were all guys who weren't highly regarded FA's but became good players for our team. Baalke and our scouts have a really good eye for finding those mid to lower tier veterans who fit our team and become big contributors.

Pears is a much better OT than an OG, and Tomsula has mentioned he views Pears as a Tackle for us. He has never given up more than 4 sacks in a season, and fits better in a ZBS. It's been talked about how he isn't the strongest guy which might be why he grades poorly against the run. But in a Tomsula interview he mentioned that that has been a focus for him and Pears is the strongest he's ever been. This should help him become a decent run blocker, even when we run our power plays. I think Pears will pleastly surprise us and be a decent OT for us.

Now I think our starting lineup will be:
Staley, Boone, Kilgore, Martin, Pears
With B. Thomas first off the bench in jumbo packages and to fill in at LG or RG if one of our starters gets injured. The remaining 2 OL on our roster will be T. Brown, and Farrell. I think we have great versatility amongst most of our OL which is why I see us keeping only 8 OL on the roster instead of the usual 9 we have kept the past few years... We need every roster spot we can get.

I think Boone covers LT and RT if either staley or Pears gets hurt. Thomas would then fill in at LG or RG if Boone would need to play tackle or if he or Martin get hurt. T.Brown will be our emergency swing Tackle if Boone is hurt and not available to fill in. Martin can play C if Kilgore gets hurt and Farrell can play either OG spot or be our emergency C if Kilgore and Martin were to both be injured. Like I said, we have great versatility and this would give us plenty of contingency plans in case of injuries. Great job by Baalke for aquiring so many versatile lineman, and great job by our coaching staff for having guys practice and prepare at different positions during OTA's.

So you've got Staley, Boone, Kilgore, Martin, Pears making the team as well as Farrell and Thomas and Brown. Those are the 8 I have as well...even though we kept 9 last year. That said, I also go back and forth between Farrell and Looney as Looney played well at C for us at the end of the year and can play both G positions and he's a strong blocker on the move (pulling) which may translate to a quality ZB OL if he continues to slim down and hit the cardio. But Farrell may very well be the more natural fit there. So I go back and forth on that one and will have to analyze the OL again this year during pre season to figure it out (WRATH and I predicted Farrell last year to make the 53 as a result of that work).

Yeah I see Farrell over Looney, but that's simply my preference. Last year the FO seemed to protect this guy all season, letting guys like Bykowski and Snyder go while keeping him off the PS. This bodes well for his future.

I've done quite a few 53 man roster projections in my head and I think keeping 8 OL instead of the usual 9 will be the best play. Almost all 8 I listed are versatile and can play all over the line, we need every roster spot we can get with all the young talent we have at several spots (WR, CB, LB, RB). I also see Silberman on the PS for emergency OG work and Justin Renfrow or Gottschalk for emergency/developmental OT.

Nice post. I can't wait to see how many of these battles will shake out!

I'm going to go on record and restate what I said when Forrester was OL coach under Singletary - I didn't like the way the OL played. I'm not sure if it was the talent or the coaching or the overall offensive scheme, but all I know is that I didn't like their play. Forrester's unit IMHO never played well together and that was a big reason why Alex constantly would drift to his right and throw from his back foot. I'm really hoping Chris has gotten better since.

2008: Hill and JT O'Sullivan at QB, 36 year old Bruce as their #1 receiver, 34 year old Barry Simms at RT and mad Martz as OC.
2009: Smith started 10 games in his return from shoulder surgery, RG Rachal and RT Snyder, injured Crabtree as the #1 receiver and Jimmy Raye as OC.

The OLs during these two years was pretty anemic so I wouldn't blame Foerster. Hard to build a line getting new pieces year to year. The right side was so bad in 2008 they changed it completely for 2009. Then in 2010 they finally addressed the OL by drafting two first round players--Davis and Iupati--and moved Baas to center. Foerster left seeing two power blockers being drafted.

So how much of a Battle for Battle today? Many say we are interested, but so are 25 other teams.

With off-field concerns and much less ability to gather information about supplemental draft prospects, I'd be surprised if he went early. If they bid something like a 4th for him, that's little risk in a draft where we expect to have 12 picks (so far )
LOL, I'm an idiot. He already went in the fifth.

I think that is my mantel. I posed the question after fact.

Call my cynical but, I think if Looney is close to anyone else he gets the nod. Once Looney goes Baalke has to hear about an entire years draft is down the drain.

I think this is still a valid concern in context though. It's something to watch closely. Given he and Wolford had big success AFTER they left the 49ers is a pretty good sign he may not have been as bad as we thought with us?
