Nice post. I can't wait to see how many of these battles will shake out!

I'm going to go on record and restate what I said when Forrester was OL coach under Singletary - I didn't like the way the OL played. I'm not sure if it was the talent or the coaching or the overall offensive scheme, but all I know is that I didn't like their play. Forrester's unit IMHO never played well together and that was a big reason why Alex constantly would drift to his right and throw from his back foot. I'm really hoping Chris has gotten better since.

I think this is still a valid concern in context though. It's something to watch closely. Given he and Wolford had big success AFTER they left the 49ers is a pretty good sign he may not have been as bad as we thought with us?

Plus they seem to be better at coaching zone scheme rather than a man gap scheme which is what singletary wanted them to coach and had our OL run

THIS.

Look at Foerster's success in WAS, and how quickly they let him walk after hiring Scotty Mac (who wants to transition to a gap/power scheme).

I'm really hoping this is the case.

I'm w/you.

I hope it gels fast.
So if the o line stinks, does this affect kap's or tomsula's status on the team moving forward or do both get a buy until this unit gels or gets some talent next year? The o line is the weak link on the whole team. Losing Davis really hurts. Pears is probably worse than Martin.

Pears is definitely not worse than Martin. Not even close. Pears got positive grades per PFF as a RT on the s**tty bills offense most probably being blitzed quite frequently. HE IS SOLID AS A TACKLE. however as a guard he downright sucked. One of the worst in the league.

Pears also performed better in a ZBS. Did pretty well in that scheme under Chan Gailey, struggled when they changed to power scheme under Marrone.
O-line is definitely my biggest area of concern. Staley is a rock, he's going to play well, so no worries there.

Boone is solid and versatile. Can play both guard and tackle spots if need be. Pears is a stop-gap option at RT. I expect him to be better this year playing tackle in a ZBS, but you never know. He could very well suck too.

Kilgore is coming back from a leg injury. Can he get into camp, in shape, and be ready for the season? Martin struggled last year, he needs to improve. Thomas is a complete unknown at this point.

Just a lot of uncertainty here. They might be good, might be awful, nobody knows. I think we're making the right move by switching to ZBS tho. It fits these players better.
Hoping this coaching staff has these guys ready to play & attack teams aggressively all games & all season long!

Nice post SofaKing!

Pears may prove to be a gem. In the meantime, I'm sure they're going to aggressively develop Trent Brown for RT. I don't think he'll be starting this season but I'm hoping he can get some game experience.

I have a lot of confidence in Kilgore and I hope he's ready.

Martin and Thomas are under the spotlight. It's time for them to perform. I'm in their corner and can't wait for camp to see who makes the grade.

Agree! I'm hopeful as well and so I'll give Tomsula and company benefit of the doubt until we see what they do. There are so many experienced coaches on the staff that they should be able to get players up to speed quickly. Most of the staff is known for developing players, which was Tomsula and Logan's strongest area...Tomsula sending Europe players to the NFL and Logan sending college and Europe players to the NFL.

I'm not terribly concerned about Pears. Performance-wise, he's already a HUGE step up from Martin and Davis, in terms of pass protection. If we really do shift the play calling to a majority of zone plays, he should do very well. If we stick with a lot of power, either his weight room improvement will show up, or he'll get beat for the RT job by Boone or Brown. The talent is there this year, IMO, the lineup just needs to get sorted out quickly enough for guys to get situated in their roles and gain familiarity as a unit.
I think they'll be all right as long as guys get healthy to go in training camp. Having a healthy Kilgore, Martin and Thomas to compete and learn will be huge.
I haven't heard much about Thomas so far...I'm assuming he was full go in the past mini camps?

Would be pretty sensational for Brown to make an impact but if he can even be an OK backup the depth will be improved!

Davis seemed to be regressing...whether weight or health played a part doesn't change the fact. My preference would be Boone at OT but may the best man start!
A Davis was a great run blocker but I don't believe he rated higher than 20 something as a tackle and I believe his average grade was much worse. Pears will be a better and had been a better pass protector but worse run blocker.

Since kap and Hyde can make plays I think pass pro for kap and the offense is much more important than run blocking. Our offense will take a huge jump is pass pro improves just a bit which I think we will (on the 52 sacks).
