Speaking of your crazy opinions,...here is a new idea you might get behind: Why don't we just tank in 2024 so we can earn a pick high enough for a top tackle??

Why would you want to do that?

So we left the draft with 3 IOL? People wanted IOL and got it.

Im happy with it. I said all offseason that C and G was a bigger need than RT. Still would rather get a swing tackle bc Moore is horrible. I also don't want Burford on the team he has been horrible. It will also be interesting to see if Kingston or Nugent can kick Zakelj or Bartch off the squad

Battles in camp will be interesting

Moore vs Parker or sign a swing tackle

Bartch vs Zakelj vs Nugent vs Mays vs Nugent vs Burford for the last 2 spots.

I don't even recall Zakelj too much. Redshirted in year 1 and I don't recall year 2. Why do you want him off the team?

I didn't say I wanted him off the team. I said it will be interesting if one of these guys can take his or Bartch's spot bc they were the 2 lowest guys on their depth chart last year

I agree we don't know much anything about Zakelj, but I personally have seen enough of Moore and Burford to think its ok to move on from them. Someone else posted they believe Moore would do better at guard vs tackle, but they've never explored that.
I guess we'll be seeing Mcvitiz at right tackle again this season eh.
Drake Nugent going undrafted was a gift for the 49ers. He was the starting center on a really good Michigan O line. He may be an eventual upgrade over Brendel who was also an UDFA.

Sure looks like it.

This is what I was thinking earlier. I wanted an upgrade at center, we may have stolen one!

I've heard that nearly half of NFL players are free agents. About 30% were UDFAs. About 11% of starters were undrafted. You would think that with all the scouting teams do that this wouldn't happen but I guess they get so wrapped up talking to other teams about trades that some guys just slip by.

That is wild. It really is a crapshoot and they just don't know until they get these kids on the field, but I have a good feeling about Nugent.

That would be a total gift hope that happens. He was Michigan's center which is weird he went un drafted. He had a high rating according to the so called experts. Glad we got him though and hopefully it's our surprise this year.

Gonna be fascinating to see who takes 2nd team snaps in camp.

I am reading up on this Nugent kid and am surprised he went undrafted. I think he may seriously have a shot and even be better than Brendal.

He was in DJ's top 150 big board (which means nothing).

i won't pretend like I've watched much of him…seems like he's pretty small overall. Thorn said their run heavy approach with a lot of play-action protected him as a pass protector (not a ton of one-on-ones). Moves well in the running game.

honestly he sounds a lot like Brendel lol.

Which was realistically gonna be the case, unless they moved up for an OT.

That's insane that 7 OTs went in the first round. I don't know enough about the draft prospects, but to think there were 8 first round worthy OTs is hard to believe (the 49ers would have drafted the 8th OT at #31). The 8th OT was taken in the latter half of the 2nd round.

I'll just add that two/three of them can also play left tackle. They added depth and versatility - specially at the left tackle position. If it's true that Kyle's offense will be more pass happy (I doubt that) then you don't need a Trent Williams road grader at left tackle, but more of a Colton Mckivitz/Jalon Moore guy who can pass protect better than Run Block.

Eeeww. McKivitz is better than McGlinchey (barely) at pass protecting but to just call Trent a road grader? Neither Moore nor McKivitz are average, let alone good. McKivitz could improve given it was only year 1 of him starting, but I'd rather some kind of competition. That didn't happen again. I think the passing offense will take off and I hope McKivitz can hold up enough.

As much as I hate depending on Brock's quick reads and release, it's a factor in designing an offense around him. I'd love 5 Trent William's on the offensive line, but that's just a draft and cap impossibility. Next best thing is to beef up the RB pass protections Guerendo/Mason and also bolster the interior line. I thought the interior line was a weakness against the Chiefs in the super bowl. With Guerendo - you can get Guerendo to give chip block help to McKivitz/Moore and then still go out on pass routes. The jitterbug WR's that were drafted Pearsol/Cowing will make it very dangerous for teams to blitz Brock. He'll make those teams pay (read KC). It will also help Brock as these two Wr's are precise route runners and Brock's anticipation will be impossible to stop with both Deebo, Aiyuk, and Pearsol/Cowing running the triangle offense. If you have a quick passing game, the interior line is probably as important (or more important) than the outside OT's.
