i think they gonna try Puni out everywhere. They are gonna try and get their 5 best lineman starting. IMO, i think day 1 its gonna be this:
- LT: Trent Williams
- LG: Aaron Banks
- Center: Feliciano
- RG: Dominick Puni
- RT: Colton McKitvitz

Like i posted in the FA thread, i really hope 49ers are on the phone with Saints for a possible trade for Ryan Ramzyck to fill that RT spot. We would have a beastly O-line

Man may never play again. Why do we want him if the Saints dont?

Question for the OL guys, what positions do Puni & Kingston project at in the NFL? I know they both played Tackle in college, but were announced as Guards.

Everyone is saying Puni can't play tackle because of his arm length but I disagree. Teams usually want 34+ inch arms for tackles. Puni has 33 3/8" arms which would be in the 30th percentile for tackle, so yes on the smaller side but not egregiously small. Colton Mckivitz (who played tackle in college but was projected to be a guard when we drafted him) has 33 3/4" arms. There's also this guy named Joe Staley who had 33 1/2" arms. Jason Peters had 33 1/8" arms and was just fine. So I'm not fully buying the arm length argument. Now I do think he should start out on the inside while he continues to build some nfl strength, but I do think he can play tackle at some point.

Kingston though for sure doesn't have the size/length for tackle, and is even light for guard. I think we might try to develop him as a center who can also play guard

I just don't understand this whole train of thought. People saying someone "can't play" somewhere when they literally been playing that position in college.

But but but that's not the pros. Yeah, well where the f**k do the pro players come from? I get the argument that G or C or IOL might be the "better" place for some in the pros, but to say they can't do something that they literally have been doing is laughable to me.

And the whole arm length thing. Look, if it's like 30" arms okay I get it, bet when we are talking 1/8's of an inch, hell even 1/2", GTFO of here man lol Maybe they should grow their fingernails before combine measurements to make that up

Not when dealing with career threatening injuries no.

I do too, he is a big athelitic guy. Why couldn't he learn from Trent?

Not just technique but learn how to be a pro, how to train to get your body ready, how to be a silver back!
There is still cap casualties that may come available.

And there might be a practice squad guy on another team that may have been on our board that we can pluck.

Interesting…

This is what he said

"I think he'll end up being a guard," McCloughan said. "He's really good with his hips and feet. Really good. But I'm not so sure he can't be a left tackle when it's all said and done … if he gets stronger."

Yeah I don't know if Puni will end up at OT whether right or left in time but I also think the idea that his physical tools make him ineligible to play there is just scout talk.

Rashawn Slater's numbers in comparison to Puni
Slater/Puni
Height: 6'4 1/4 vs 6'5 1/8
Weight: 304 lbs vs 313 lbs
Arm Length: 33 in vs 33 3/8 in
Hand size: 10 1/2 in vs 10 1/8 in
40 time: 4.88 vs 5.35
10 yard split: 1.68 s vs 1.86 s
Shuttle: 4.45 vs 4.40
3 cone: 7.48 vs 7.47
Vertical: 33 in vs 30 in
Broad: 9 ft 4 in vs 8 ft 11 inch
Bench: 33 reps vs 26 reps

Puni's agility for his size is pretty darn impressive as his agility drills are better than Slater. Slater comes out on top in the strength and explosion drills.

I think if Puni hits the gym hard he can certainly play outside and his weight and arm length will not be an issue in doing so.
Some of the not an OT talk also stems from the offense he played in…very little true pass sets. It was all RPO stuff.

The length isn't elite. I also don't think it's the total reason why he's not being looked at as a OT 100%.

I think it's more about where he could have the most success…could he play RT? Possibly. At this point his transition to OG might be more smooth than him trying to play on the outside. Who knows though.
If he was in a offense that asked him to be on island and legit pass block on real drop backs all game…I don't think anyone would be saying his arm length isn't allowing him to be a OT at the next level.

I trust his evaluation of O lineman. I remember the line he drafted. They were awesome... good news.
